So guys, this is going to sound life a life story but bare with me here.
The ignition on my cbf 125 packed up the other week so I bought a new aftermarket one of ebay, within a few days of installing it my clocks started to play up.
One early morning on the way to work my cbf started making a horrible whining noise which sounded like it was coming from the clocks, I pulled over to investigate but to my surprise found nothing obvious so I continued. A few miles down the road the speedo pin swung itself all the way round then dropped back down immediately then stopped working. The turn signal light & main beam light would not work on the clocks but the rev counter and neutral light still worked.
I bought I speedo cable thinking that was the issue but it was not as the cable currently on the bike was all good.
I got the bike into a local reputable garage and they installed a new speedo drive. All was great for 1 day!!!
Travelling to work this morning the noise came back once again which I again suspect to be from the speedometer. The speedo pin did exactly as it did the 1st time round then stopped working. The lights on the clocks are now not working, main beam light, neutral & turn signal lights still work but that's it. The clocks are still making a horrible whining noise.
Are the clocks ready to go in the bin? Or is it an electrical issue since changing the ignition?
All help is greatly appreciated

Let's break this down...

The speedo is a standard mechanical sort, from what I can see of this model, a rotating square cable driven off a worm drive from the wheel. Easy test: remove speedo cable from the clocks, spin front wheel, see if the square end rotates. That's it! It either spins or it doesn't Smile I therefore suspect the speedo mechanism is jamming up. The good news is a second-hand set is around £30~£40.

As to the other problems it's no surprise the neutral light is still working as it's usually wired a different way on most bikes - the neutral switch on the gearbox shorting to ground so the lamp just needs power. All the other lights are the reverse, they need a ground connection and I reckon you've probably disturbed this when changing the ignition.

Get a new set of clocks and be diligent when you plug everything in Smile

Going with the - maybe you disturbed an earth idea. Maybe you did. maybe the speedo is using the speedometer cable as an earth connection as the wire thats actually meant to do the earthing has been disconnected. And thats why it all plays up eventually Maybe.

You could whip the tank off and make sure there are no stray wires left hanging . You could also rig up a temporary earth wire from one of the speedometer bolts down to earth just to check.

It wouldn't cost anything to check.

After 35 years fixing cars I've discovered that " What happened last" is a powerful diagnostic tool.

" Oh I've just filled it up with petrol". ( thinks) Oh no you havent love, it was diesel and that is why you are stopped at the side of the road.

Bearing that in mind and knowing that you have just had the thing in bits to change the ignition - it's got to be worth a check before spending any money.
