Hi All,
Yet another rear shock question.
Only option I currently have is waiting on a good used shock becoming available (missed a couple) which doesn't happen too often as most are f*cked by now.

So doing some thinking.
The bottom shock mount is 45mm wide, yes really.
It slots into a 50mm space on swingarm.

Most shocks mounts seem to be around 20-30mm wide MAX.
SO, hypothetically.... it I was to decrease the distance on the "fork" mount on swingarm....by...I dunno welding a couple of bits of steel plate to both sides on inside of the "fork" taking the space down to say 30mm.
Would this be a bad idea? & why?

See pics of scrap swingarm & shock. I have a nice replacement swingarm & have a shock from an earlier version of same bike & there are some nice aftermarket shocks available.

Cheers,
GAZ

Those aren't the 2 items you are looking to use right? Were they found on the Titanic? Laughing

My old Hyosung had 2 shims on the shock and was using an SV650 rear shock. I didn't have any issues but it was a bitch to remove.

Yep - wouldn't be averse to using some well greased spacers, washers even, to pack it our. Check periodically for 'slop'. I am known for heartless bodgery however.

What I would do.

    1. Grind the two existing sticking up parts of the connection bracket off, not the horizontal part as it spreads the load on any point contact on the main frame. The main frame is probably only 2mm, whereas the bracket is somewhere around 4/5mm.

    2. Make a spacer of the correct length (to suit the width of your chosen shock) plus clearance (washer either side), use a bit of square bar (it's easier to clamp, or grind a flat on a bit of round), with a hole through it to take a bolt, clamp it to the main frame on to of old bracket.

    3. Make two new end tabs, radius and weld-prep the ends, and clamp them to the square spacer block.

    4. Weld the new tabs on the outside to existing bracket, remove square spacer, weld inside.

    5. TIG (the main frame will be thinner than the bracket) Weld around the outside of the old existing bracket, the main frame will be thinner than the bracket, in case the bracket to frame integrity is suspect.

Just saying.....

Perhaps sir could look in a "silentbloc" or similar catalogue to see if there'a a suitable component that could be pressed in?

I'd just use a couple of spacers.

Make sure the hole in them is wide enough to take the bolt but not the bushing collar. Once it's all tightened down properly against the bushing, it should act like a single, solid piece of metal anyway.

This was my 1st thought seeing as i don't have access to welding gear.
Sounded too simple though.....
