I’ve got a distinctive noise around the clutch area. When riding or idling there is a slight rumble from the clutch housing. When clutch is pulled in the noise stops. I’ve open the casing and checked plates etc all seem ok. The only thing I’ve noticed is slight play on the outer basket. Should there be any play at all? I’ve attached a video so hopefully you can see.
I’m sure this has got gradually worst over the last year.
I can also feel the rumble through the feet pegs??
Thanks in advance

Interesting that the noise goes away when the clutch is disengaged; that is, when pressure applied through the push rod bears against pressure plate and compresses the clutch springs. Vibrations through the foot peg does not sound good. Look at this diagram:
https://www.oemmotorparts.com/oem5.asp?M=Yamaha&T=FZS%20FAZER%20%20600&Y=2002&L=YA-FZS-FAZER-600-2&O=CLUTCH&F=YA-FZS-FAZER-600-2_ap&L2=YA-FZS-FAZER-600-2_ap.

There are two bearings, #6 and #30, a thrust plate, collar, and spacer (#27, 28 & 29) that the clutch basket assembly rides on. I'm thinking that one of the bearings could be failing. The spacer looks like it might doubles as the inner race for bearing #30. My suggestion is to pull it the rest of the way apart and examine those bearings.

Is this noise/rumble road speed related or engine speed related ?

Any indication of poor gear selection, jumping out of gear at all ?

How about transmission snatch or power transmission "delay" like with a really loose chain.
By this I mean, the change over from overrun to power, there seems to be a long delay and a snatch in reaction, just like a really loose chain ?

How is the engine idle and how are the carb to head rubbers, perished and or cracks ?

Poor carb balance can cause clutch basket "chatter" amplifying any transmission "play".

I have seen the clutch basket movement, how is the clutch hub movement, the bit held in place by the tight ( not loose ) centre nut. The hub should have ideally no in and out movement or side to side movement, and should rotate freely and smoothly with gearbox in neutral.

Remember that the clutch hub is gearbox input and the clutch basket is crank "output" with the clutch plates etc being the "disconnect able" link between the two.

How are those springs in the back of the clutch basket, any broken ?

Disconnect the battery if you have not done so.

Maybe your next step is to check those springs, depending on the verdict of all of the above.

Noises, vibrations etc can be tricky to locate, noise can seem to be under clutch cover but could be coming from the other side.

Give us feedback on above ...take your time and be methodical.

Further to above...

The clutch basket has many parts and is a "unit".
The large outer gear is indipendent of the alloy basket. The gear transmits power to the alloy part via the springs. The gear will rotate slightly both directions relative to the alloy part, the springs being power and over run "connection".

Is there much "play" between gear and alloy part ?

Play/wobble between gear and alloy part ?
With gear held still via crank, any "free play" between gear and alloy part, rather than "spring pressure "....
