Going to keep it brief... I'm getting myself into shape. Workout 3 times a week which is having the desired effect on my general fitness. But I'm still a chunky monkey. Not helped by my poor food choices (sad little side effect of working daft long days). Thinking of replacing one maybe two meals a day with those complete shakes you see (I can manage prepping and cooking 1 balanced meal a day, 2 meals is pushing it on work days hence seeking an easier way)

But, there's so damn many of them. Help me out folks. Which ones are worth it, which ones taste nice and which ones will help me trim the fat, tone up and leave me feeling satisfied between mealtimes. I tried doing a websearch, but there's so much sales bullshit and pseudoscience, I quickly gave up.

Cheers all

As usual, karma for any help.

I just used to buy a box of Complan powder.
Couldn't be doing with all those special energy bars and fancy flavours (why say chocolate brownie flavour when you can just say "triple chocolate" Laughing )

You're right. There is so much competition for that market now, I don't tend to believe all the "new" hype. I just went with Complan (or if I didn't have any, then Nurishment banana Laughing ).

Complan (chocolate, for preference) worked fine for me, if I wanted to feel more satisfied I'd add less milk (or more Complan Laughing ), justifying it by telling myself that it was less calories than what I would eat if I was eating real food.

For some people, the time of day is what makes the difference, everyone knows at what time of day they feel more satiated.
For me, I have to get a good start to the day, else I feel hungry/eat junk, so those drinks are no use to me first thing in the morning.
I can easily have a smaller meal at night (or even not at all, depending on when I've eaten during the afternoon), that's when I used to have them.

Worked alright, but only in the short term, as I get easily bored of them.

Never seen the benefit of them mesell.

I went veggie a year and a half ago. That trimmed the excess and kept it off.
That and I got faster on my bikes (pedal) and just feel better.

Was a convicted meat eater that shot my own food as well so giving up was a big thing.

Maybe not quite what you were after, but for years I'd have breakfast which consisted of this and it would take 30 seconds to prep and consume and keep hunger off for 4-5 hours.

Eat a banana, then make smoothie / shake out of:
1 part Banana Whey Protein mixed with 3 part Powdered Oats
To wash down:
1 multi vit, a vitC, vitB, CodLiver oil, Linseed oil, occasionally Zinc + Magnesium + Iron + Glucosamine Sulphate + Inulin as a prebiotic source of fibre

Breakfast, or if going out for a 10+ mile walk, 20 mile cycle or time on weights.

Basically protein (30g) + complex carbs (90g) + some vits = sort of meal replacement. Seemed to work well.

EDIT:

Would roughly equate to 500 calories.
10g fat (2.7g saturates)
63g carbs (of which only 2g sugar)
11g fibre
32g protein
0.13g salt

And you've hit the nail squarely on the head.

None of them will help you do that and any that say they do, are peddling bullshit and pseudoscience.

Losing weight and getting fit is a simple balance of exercise and diet - use more calories than you put in, you lose weight - combine that with more exercise, then you get fitter, keeping in mind the more exercise you do, the more calories you will need to be able to sustain the level of exercise.

Forget pseudoscientific shakes and supplements, eat what you like and calorie count - you wont get the results overnight, but you will get there in the end and keep it that way.

It takes people a long time to get chubby.
So plan on taking a long time to get not chubby.

A big part of it is eating too much for meals.
There's a connection between a stuffed belly and appetite.
When the stomach is full the feeling of hunger should be switched off by the brain.
Sugar in the blood has an effect on this too. But takes longer.
So if you still feel hungry after eating a whole pie then one needs to try to 'train' ones belly to be accustomed to feeling full with less.

Reducing the appetite helps reduce the risks associated with piling it all back on (and more) after you torture yourself to lose it.

And forget 'special' diet shite.

Eat better, eat less, do more and be healthier.
Remember, nutritionists can be more full of shite than a diet food company.

The only shake you need is to shake that fat Arse about burning calories.

The shake could be a treat. But that may mean it replaces the act of sitting down munching other stuff that you like. Eating at a slower pace helps the hunger reflex thing too.

I try* and cut out all raw sugar. In tea: gone. fizzy pop: gone, chocolate: >70% dark so I don't pig through it. I haven't tasted Coca Cola in over 7 years.

Still drink beer though Shifty

I used Ketogenesis when I was in the UK.

It didn't satiate me in the same way that normal keto does but it is close. Some of them taste fantastic but then most things will when mixed with double cream. Laughing

Lost 20kg+ in 3 months but that was with a severe calorie restriction and I used shakes for 2 meals out of the day and then in the evening I usually made something really simple like some meat and some green vegetable.

Perhaps I was too brief. I work 12hr days on a 4 day rota. Since the start of the year, I’ve done a workout on every day off (3 days a week and I rotate between strength training and cardio). I feel great, but my diet is shocking. I’m well aware that getting up earlier or planning ahead and making all my meals in advance from scratch will do the trick. But that just isn’t going to happen. I’m not gaining weight, even with a pretty poor diet (I eat far too much of the wrong stuff) so for a few months I’d like to have an easy option to ensure I’m getting the correct nutritional balance whilst making sure I burn slightly more calories than i consume. Shakes seem like the easiest way. I’m not after a quick fix of 30lbs in 30days. I just recognise that on work days, due to time limitations and limited options, I eat terrible food (nutritionally, taste wise it’s fab!)

Mate, I’ve got a degree in biology so I’ve a fair idea on nutrition and the body, some of what I hear coming from so called nutritionists scares me with just how wrong they are!

Not after a quick fix, just need the most convenient way of getting a balanced meal. A complete meal shake if it is actually complete seems pretty convenient. Just need to know which are actually what they say they are, which are not and which ones to avoid because they tasted like something you’d suck from a tramps arse.

Use that latent Degree in biology big yin.

Think.... Field Trips to Glamorgan, Cairngorms, Lake District once a week on the push bike. Cool

I personally wouldn't go much further than complan.
The Choccy Shake is too nice to avoid logging on it. Embarassed

I am a confirmed specialist at putting weight on BTW.

I am not a dieter/protein shaker though.
Eating Less is my favourite tool though.

Couple of guys in work drink the Huel stuff and seem to liek it. Looks like a bit of a hipster craze at the moment judging by their marketing. They claim it's a complete meal anyway and the guys in work seem to think it tasted ok at least.

Forget all the techno shakes.

Swap one of your meals for one of the fresh soup things (aldi do some awesome ones with a bit of a kick) in the supermarket fridge they are filling and come in around 370 calories. Easy to carry into work and warm up etc.

Should either keep you going to the evening, or if youve had a bigger lunch will be a light way to go to bed.

Try it for 2 weeks, see if you notice the difference

Also - sparkling water is a good way to hydrate through the day, notnquite as boring as council pop, fairly cheap and keeps cravings away.
I do a similar shift pattern to you, but 2 days, 2 nights and 4 off. Stock up on soup and water ahead of my days on, and its done

I tend to go for just a protein shake for lunch at work so I dont have to spend time in the morning/evening prepping lunch. I currently favour Impact diet whey from myprotein

Its about 200 calories for a 2 scoop shake, at that rate a 2.5kg sack lasts a month or so and the flavours arent bad. Im tempted to start doing it for 2 meals a day in future to start losing weight a bit more, that or maybe i just need to stay away from the hobnobs in the canteen at work. Laughing

Cook properly, save something for next day. "Shakes" are crap. Get it right yourself, it's easy enough. If you don't know what to eat, or how to cook it simnply and easily, learn.

Replacing one or two meals a day? Have only one or two meals a day. Walk for 1/2 an hour. The blubber will fall away.

Not what I asked dude. I drive for a living (yeah yeah, putting that degree to good use I know Wink ). My breaks are often in lay-bys with no access to microwaves etc. Some weeks I work 8days straight and cannot be arsed going to the supermarket to restock on fresh stuff to make sandwiches, or salads or anything else like that. Also, bollocks to fannying around making a several days worth of food when sometimes I’m lucky to have 6hours at home between shifts. I need something as convenient as walking into a sandwich shop or petrol station and grabbing stuff that’s ready to eat. Hence the shakes.

Edit: just done the maths and it’s more like 7-9 hours at home between shifts... even so, it’s not a huge amount of time.

I presume with a job like that, that takes up so much of your waking hours, you're earning a lot. So why not buy pre-prepared salads, pre-cooked chicken, tinned tuna and sardines, nuts, fresh fruit etc - stuff that you can just grab and eat? Fish and chicken, as well as being good sources of protein, are quite filling too, so snack on those.
Actually, that's not a particularly expensive kind of diet anyway.
