Morning all, sometimes I need to show how blatantly noob I am when it comes to motorcycles... So my question for today is how do I find out what sprockets I need for my bike as well as chain?

If anyone knows the best brands for sprockets and x-ring chains then please let me know!

If so, start of this video explains:

Thanks for the pointer mate but they don't have Zontes on their drop-down list and searching "Zontes" and "ZT125-U" bring up zero results using their search bar.

To be honest, I don't have to replace them I just wanted whatever sprocket makes the acceleration a little better at the reduction of top-speed. I thought that since the chain would come off at the same time that I would replace it with an x-ring chain since I intend to put some big miles on it (hopefully). What's the phrase... "preventative maintenance"? Embarassed Laughing

Ok, in that instance you're talking about lowering the gearing by changing the number of teeth on the sprocket.

Good section in this piece on the subject:
https://lifeatlean.com/the-effects-of-motorcycle-gearing-changes/

(Good site by the way, and a decent YouTube channel - local guy to me, with whom I have some mutual friends).

Mate brilliant read, so I should be going one tooth down in the front (primary) sprocket and two teeth up in the rear (final drive) sprocket?

Great info, thanks for the article, just a little gutting that the linked website in the article didn't have my bike (or any other Zontes 125) in the list.

Now I need to figure out what the stock sprockets were. I might just go physically count the teeth since it's parked outside. Where do I find out the chain dimensions though because I looked through the shite owners manual and can't find it.

Make it even slower? Shocked

You don't need to remove or split the chain from the bike to change either sprocket.

Yes Embarassed I only really use the bike for going to-and-from work. The vast majority of the miles are on 30 and 40mph roads with the exception of one 50mph road that links Blantyre and Halfway but it's only about 1 mile long. I thought having a bit more acceleration would be nice on the town streets and getting away from lights a little quicker.

Lmao I already rev the tits off it. It's just gutless as fuck. Saying that the biggest performance enhancement I can make to the bike is myself losing weight Laughing

Other day was at ASDA and there were three kids probably around 9 - 11 sitting and playing on the bike when I came back to it. I expected them to split and run when they saw me but they asked me if I can let them rev it. Gutting to see the disappointment on their faces when it wasn't loud enough Sad

I've found out the chain is a standard 520 112, so I had a look about for a chain that will be long-wearing and was thinking about this one:

https://chainsandsprockets.co.uk/products/motorcycle-chain-did-xring-super-heavy-duty-gold-520zvmxgg-112-zj?_pos=13&_sid=dcbb49fc4&_ss=r

Anyone got any opinions on this chain or brand? I assume there's no problem using a heavy duty chain instead of standard?

DID chains are pretty much the standard when it comes to chains on motorcycles, the Hondas and Yamahas that I've had in the past all came with DID chains as OEM fitment. They last well with the correct maintenence.

If it's the correct size, it's probably your best bet.

Got the chain ordered and it's on its way to me.

Zontes told me the sizes of the OEM sprockets but as for specific JT part numbers they said to ask JT for their recommendation. I sent JT an e-mail last week and to-date there has been no response.

So I ordered a replacement set of OEM sprockets and I will manually measure the sizes and dimensions and then model them into CAD and find the JT part numbers myself.

Pain in the arse, but once it's done: it's done and maybe one day when someone Googles "Zontes ZT125 gearing sprocket" or the like they will find this thread and it will be useful to them.

Mate the kids were totally gutted and what hurt the most wasn't their visible upset at the ring-a-ding shit 125cc noise but it was the sympathetic looks they were giving me as they departed feeling sorry for me and my pathetically small engine Embarassed Laughing

I don't think it matters what you get next as long as it has at least 3 cylinders and no baflles... just for the sake of those poor kids (and your pride).

Get a triple, the popping on the overrun when you back off the throttle will bring a smile to anyones face.

Is it only triples that pop and bang or would the Katana/SuperSport do it too? Is de-cat and removing the baffles together make the sound too much or nice? I've only ever changed the exhaust on one car before and it was a BMW 750i where I removed the resonators and breadbox at the tips to just straight pipes from the catalytic converters back to tips and it sounded fantastic.

The only time I ever ran a car without cats was a 2.0 litre Honda CR-V where the pipe before the cat had a massive hole in it and it sounded like an angry god.

I wasn't aware of teh triple-pot pop thing, just that more than one or two are needed for a decent bike 'howl'. If you want a pop on over-run then just let some air in one ore more of the headers - a small hole will do it

It seems to be a specifically sprint ST thing and they do it as standard.

It's not not massively load popping, just enought to make it's presence known.

In case this thread is ever found by someone Googling the JT Sprockets parts for a Zontes ZT125-U, I took the dimensions from the stock sprockets and found the closest ones available from JT's drawings:

Front = JTF326,
Rear = JTR823,
Chain = 520 112.
