I have two that work with my phone, one wifi and one bluetooth.

(Bought the wifi one first and then found out that the best software for the strumpet only works with bluetooth.)

Can read and clear codes okay.

i think I got it from Amazon, this link is just to show what sort I got.

How are you connecting that to a motorcycle?

I have a GS911 for my BMWs.
Does about everything.

But they're no' cheap.
And limited to a few bikes for one licence.
Unless you pay a premium for more. For a business not a hardship though.

I'm not sure it's a simple as getting a single code reader for all bikes. Bikes don't legally have to adhere to the OBDII standard, so hardly any of them do. Apparently Triumph is close, but not exactly the same. My Street Triple has an OBDII style port, but the pinouts don't follow the spec exactly. A lot of bikes don't even have a diagnostic port. My CBR600RR has a diagnostic port, but it's a 4 pin proprietary Honda port.

My GF has a 2011 ER6N, but I have no idea what the diagnostic port is like. I've not seen an OBDII port anywhere, and haven't examined it closely enough to find any proprietary port.

I recently bought this OBDIlink one: https://amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B00H9S71LW
Works with my BMW bike (plugs straight in) and I've also used it successfully with a VW Golf.
I had to download different (ie BMW) software for the bike (https://www.motoscan.de/) - I don't know what other software's available for different vehicles

You're not kidding! - hence the above route for me

There's lots of evidence and from my own experience phaphing with code readers et al that going too cheap will not allow a reasonable method of accessing info on board.

I have a £7 ebay/Amazon OBDII plugin bt doofur.
It doesn't support all of the functions of many or any of the apps that it can connect to.

It can read 'some' codes but a lot of useful codes it cannot see.
OEM is not obliged to make all info accessible they only need to make some basic things easy to see.

I would think somewhere around £50 would get a good reader and app to connect to.
But possibly some special functions would require more dosh to the software suppliers.

Most /all jap bikes use software that is OBD2 compliant there are adaptor leads
Triumph is OBD2 as standard

I then add a bluetooth adaptor and Torque pro

I also have a cheap is reader from china that workes OK ish

As said GS911 for bmw had one for years !

Does anyone know the difference between Honda K-line or CAN?

Could also do with adjusting things like idle on Hondas.

CANbus is extremely generic, I know that. A company I used to work for used it to connect cards together in a frame for video processing... But it's possible they share architecture and general principles?

CAN BUS has a two wire bus
with signals levels at a nominal 2.5V differential voltage
up to around 1Mbps
K line signals can work up to near battery voltage but much slower
usually say around 10Kbps

A diagnostic reader will use different pins and protocols to talk to either
and may only use one signal line to get codes via K line
on a basic system.

Unfortunately, as mentioned before there's no one size fits all
and Honda with their PGM-FI for instance may use K line in a similar way to Yamaha
but tailor it to their own preference.

I'm tinkering with a Honda Vision atm and have found with a PGM-FI you can read and clear dtcs without a reader.
