Police warn students to avoid science website

This is about Sci-Hub, the Pirate Bay of science papers. The gist of it is that like Telegraph articles quite a few scientific papers are behind paywalls. Fine for professors, not so good for aspiring students.

I had a quick peek and while there is a suspicious "why don't you install our lovely, lovely Sci-Hub Chrome Extension?" if you fumble a search papers do turn up if you know the DOI.

Smells of Fake News to me Thinking

A few years ago the government made it so that all government funded research had to be released uinder open access. TBH even if something isn't open access you can usually find a copy of it, or just send an email to the author's uni email address and ask for a copy (they have an authors copy). I would be very, very surprised if a uni researcher declined to send you a copy of published paper Laughing

I don't know what proportion of research is government-funded but it certainly doesn't constitute the majority.

The majority (73%) is government funded.

I have never had a problem getting access to papers, I am on Scopus, Google Scholar and ResearchGate and I find that just DM'ing the author gets you the paper.

That just means the majority of money, not the majority of research.

There could well be 5 researches sucking all that government money and 1000 researches on the bread line.

Well the people on the breadline are generally PhD students, and they are generally government funded. Most papers I read are from China or the US, but even those are mostly available.
