I haven't got a bike license and I've picked up a cbr600 for £250, I want to put the engine in my quad frame, is there anything I need to look out for. I know I'll need to weld some bits on the frame. But is there any reason not to do this please Very Happy

Other than quads are inherently dangerous and upping the power doesn't make them less so... nope, I'd say go for it Thumbs Up

The sensible thing would be to repair the bike enough to be a runner and go do some track days but hey, who wants to be sensible Wink

Apart from it being a fairly complex process that you will probably never finish, few bits to consider.

Chain run will be a pain in the arse. It has to be perfectly lined up.

Engine mounts need to be seriously strong. A few shitty welded tabs will fail, leading to an engine trying to use 100 horsepower to rotate around its own output sprocket.

Hard cornering will cause oil starvation. Bikes lean, so the centripetal force keeps the oil in the bottom of the sump under the pickup. Quads and cars don't, so the oil sits at the side of the sump under hard cornering. The solution is a different sump or rotating oil pickup, but I wouldn't go fixing the problem until the rest of the project is done.

I assume the quad was built to just about handle a 20 hp engine, and you're putting 100hp through it. Don't expect the brakes, suspension or frame to handle it.

tl;dr, you'll probably either not finish it, or hurt yourself. Video the first run for a youtube fails compilation.

If he does it properly, it'll be on LiveLeak, not YouTube, they're not keen on gore.

600cc double overhead cam ally bodied 4 cylinder in the space of a (probably air cooled) 250cc single? Do you have a fully equipped engineering shop, and can you weld?

Remember kids, bikes aren't like lego. You can't easily take a part from one bike and then fit it to another.

[quote="Easy-X"] I'll look into a few things first, but it's defo something I'm thinking of doing. I'll do some research before doing anything drastic. And yeah the quad was only is only some Chinese thing that I got for £200, it's a road legal one but wanna put a bigger engine init as its only a 200cc engine init but it's shit and slow.

I'll see what I can do if not I'll fix up the bike and sell it and sell the quad and do my bike license

There are cheaper ways of killing yourself. Have you considered skydiving with a home-made parachute, or bungee jumping with some rubber bands?

[quote="MarJay"] it's a 200cc water cooled engine in the quad frame, the project would take place at my mates workshop who can weld and has all the proper equipment mate, but I'm going to do some research before doing anything

That's the plan mate, might take a bit of time but it'll be a good but hard project to accomplish

If it has a HISS ignition, remember the key and ignition switch are an integral part of the igniotion system. You will require both to be fitted and correctly connected or it wil not run.

Quads are for farmers or attention seekers.

Furze wouldnt be asking strangers on the internet how to do it, he would have already done it and be too busy strapping a pulsejet to it.

It's a running joke round here "you are XYZ and I claim my five pounds" either as a sock or just sounding like someone else.

I admire your determination. I recommend you watch a bit of "Grind Hard Plumbing Co." on YouTube to see what you're letting yourself in for. They dump things like snowmobile engines into scratch built go-karts.

It's alright mate, I've been watching a few videos on various different projects. But I will have a little look at them later today. Cheers

You mention not having a bike licence and also not being a farmer. It hadn't occurred to me that you might be wanting to use this thing on the road, I was assuming field quad project, trying to put a cheap powerful engine into a cheap shit quad.

If you're planning on putting this thing on the road, have a read up on what is required to get it registered and MOTed. Then find out if anyone will consider insuring you. Bear in mind that you probably will crash it, and the police are likely to attend, so being legal is a good idea.
