Here's one for you, Islander; might help you to be more Scottish Laughing :

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8h0ZE9WKlRM

It's actually by an artist by the name of Al Petteway, an American who does some really beautiful stuff with celtic and, dunno, Appalachian? roots. I can play this one myself, after a fashion Smile

And while we're on the subject of helping you to be Scottish, Tony McManus, the master of celtic style acoustic guitar:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gYmzalpiDuU

Skip to about 2:50 to miss all the tuning and natter at the start. Pour yourself a whiskey, turn the lights down low, and just chill Smile

As a blues player myself, this is a tune you have to know if you're going to get up at blues jams - well, it's a minor blues, so as long as you can play that...

I've got the Live at the Regal album, widely regarded as his best ever recorded performance, but I used to have a series of three instructional videoTAPES by B.B., and he demonstrated each track in studio with his band (minus horn section) - that was some of the best playing I ever heard him do.

Two of my favourite jazz standards, not usually associated with guitar.

On the right in both videos is Tommy Emmanuel, undoubtedly a massive talent, but always comes across as a bit "look at me", whereas Joscho is clearly the reincarnation of Django and is barely trying.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EZdy41sWCsY

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l4NvioAq1yg

I showed both of those to my sister, a classical guitarist who appeared at the Albert Hall with John Williams and Julian Bream - she said she thought she could play, but now she's not so sure Laughing

And here's Tommy standing in front of the brilliant Richard Smith

And then, of course, there's the magnificent Lester Polsfuss, the Wizard of Waukesha

That first one, Grand Overture Op.61, sounds like a good fit for a harpsichord. Couldn't turn up anyone playing it on anything other than guitar though Thinking

Noice Smile

I'll give Al Petteway's stuff a listen and also more of Tony McManus methinks Smile

There's a strong traditional folk movement here and a lot of impromptu sessions - I've been to a few (my partner's cousin is a talented troubador type) but they get a bit cut throat competitive at times Laughing

This guys a pretty solid MF

Real wide range of techniques.

and if you like some fast shredding noise, but no roar roar vocals, this cheddar is top notch. Some of his albums are superb pieces of work, this is clearly his faster stuff, but hes got some groovy shit. This track though is just... utterly difficult to play Laughing

I do find free jazz a bit inaccessible. I prefer something with a bit more structure. Enjoyed your first example though. One thing about jazz players - no one knows their way around a guitar neck better.

I do have a couple of Tommy Emmanuel albums that I've yet to give a proper listen - I do like to pick out favourites and put them in a general acoustic guitar mix sometimes.

Here's Tommy in a guitar duel (tri-el?) that might surprise you:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s78WCIJD734

This is the kind of thing that gets me to pick up on some jazz influences, without having to go all in. Josh Smith is definitely someone I need to pay more attention to for this.

To me, this is so important.
Everyone is posting what is undoubtedly incredible talent here, but sitting and going through it all, has anyone else got to a point where they want something with some space? Sometimes, I'm blown away by what a guitarist doesn't play, if that makes any sense.

Still, so far I think it has been a good thread, and has shown me some artists I've never heard of that are undoubtedly great players in their genre. Keep em coming folks! Smile

Talking about not bothered about vocals, neither was this artist particularly; Mr. Intensity himself, Roy Buchanan:

I love that super rapid fretw@nking. The sheer skills...until about bar 5 then the excitement drops rapid.

The slappin' the acoustic one-man-band style...Likewise. It's great people are still teaching the old log a few new tricks.

Narrative combined with emotion.... pinnacle.

They're a rare bird and that's why something like the urgency of The Kinks *Dave Davies fluffing his way through the (possibly too brief to be called a) solo in the All day...and You really...songs stand alongside the (fairly long winded and technically basic) solo of Dave Gilmour in Wish you song.

Zappa. Genius <<<Correct use of the term.
Tommy Emmanuel ...just WFT brilliant.
*Eddie Hazel playing for Funkadelic on simply the most powerfully emotional track Maggot Brain.

Constraints of the genre will always be a constraint no matter how much I adore *Bukka White or Bill Steer.

That welsh chap (Buck) A simply super guitarist.... but well...He has no edge I mean even Tommy Emmanuel has a certain edge.

*Few favourites.

Agree. It's the artist, not the guitar itself, that makes great playing. There's an artist I've currently got my eye on, Marcus King. An excellent blues and soul player, with a fantastic soulful voice at his best. Haven't found anything that totally blows me away yet as an individual track, but he's another that has caught my attention. He's going to do it for me at some point, pretty sure of it. A package, rather than a single specific talent.

This makes me think of a slide solo Bonnie Raitt did on a Buddy Guy tune called "Feels Like Rain" - painfully brief, but so much emotion in it, beautiful.

Yeah, that's kind of how I feel about him so far. I could learn some technique from him, but so far I'm not inclined to rush out and add his records (if he has any) to my collection.

I've also just hit on a band called "Texas Flood"; obvious SRV connotations, and that's mostly what he (Tommy Katona) does. Waiting for him and his band to start writing their own material ( Praying ). But also, he doesn't seem to have the total connection that Stevie himself had. Not quite playing by rote - heard a couple of bits where he does his own thing, but he really needs to do more of that. Keeping an eye, just in case...technically it's all there, but does he have more....??

Andrew Fraser's muchleu underappreciated Bass.

And inimitable Paul Rodgers vocal (looks too much like that Whanker Rustle Bland in that clip.)

Rodgers in Bad Company was good.

I believe that Free were a smash hit wonder and never produced much better than Alright Now.

The one track I liked from them was "Wishing Well", also became popular for covers bands.

Nothing of note...been spread a bit thin for a good while...as in listening to all sorts of stuff, plus struggling on with my own music. Some days I could cheerfully sell the lot and be done with playing anything again....then find myself recording a cool noise and thinking 'yeah i'll sample that and use it in the next....' oh FFS!

Lemme see

[one moment, your call is important to us]

This https://youtu.be/ur4HTYhYATE has that playing in yer bedroom 'giving it all that' thing going for it.

and here https://youtu.be/3PWG376pAeU he is on the acoustic doing something many of us have a bash at.

Marvellous showman t'boot....literally with a boot. 'played' guitar with his foot. As witnessed by me ..hmmm about 3' away. For that night he was the single best guitarist in the world and I'd fight yer for it.

The Groundhogs is a band I never did get around to checking out, but have been aware they're something I might like for a long while.

The acoustic blues tune sounds almost identical to a version I have by a band called Buick 6. I saw them in a small pub in Oxford as part of one of two Oxford Blues Festivals I went to; they were excellent:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oRbGbTw5TSI

Got two albums of theirs, on some small independent label, don't know how easy it would be to find copies now. One is more like that Tony McPhee performance (a Bukka White tune?), acoustic guitar, the other more like the electric version in the vid. above, which is how I saw them play. I seem to remember the drummer/percussionist being particularly noteworthy.

There is a well known folk musician Shocked
Richard Thompson.
I'm not a huge fan, but there are two tunes of his that I absolutely love, the first acoustic:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j0kJdrfzjAg

Always wanted to learn to play that one.

The second is more rock 'n' roll / rockabilly, but in keeping with a mainly folk act, there's a hint of the celtic in it, with a kind of drone sound, much like you'll hear in some of Rory Gallagher's playing:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fGKkhUkxvc4

He's another artist I've got a couple of albums by, but never found anything from him that I like quite as much as these two.

My favourite Deep Purple track, here performed by Joe Bonamassa and Jimmy Barnes:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=69EcnxJmnd4

Tracks like this, and stuff from Led Zep that got me into blues; always picked up on the rock guys that did some even before I knew anything about the genre.
