I'm new to the forum and just logged on to say "hi". I'm hoping to sit my CBT soon (next month).

Never been on a bike before..... I'm not your typical CBT'er, I'm 49! But hey... you only live once eh?

I hope everyone is well

"Not your typical..."

No, plenty of people in the same boat... that's unfortunately not yet left dock due to Covid Sad The roads are going to be buzzing with 2-wheelers this summer!

Welcome, and when I was doing my CBT out of the 8 people doing it that day I'd say only 1 was under the age of 30 and at least 4 of them were re-doing their CBT because the 2-year validity was expiring. There is a surprising number of people who only ever want to ride a 125cc moped or bike and I think they are mental. I've only put 800 miles on my 125cc and cannot wait till I get a real engine.

Pigeon did something like 5 CBT's before realising he could just have a proper bike Laughing

I only ever did one. It was only so I could take my test and back then you only needed to do it the once.

Hi Fellas,

I really appreciate the warm welcome! Middle Finger

Yeah i must admit i am a bit apprehensive of doing my CBT, i have this vision of the place being full of 17 year olds, and me wobbling about like an old git as the kids snigger lol.

I'm up near sunny Middlesbrough and i have heard "Train to Ride" are pretty decent, so i will be giving them a shout in a couple of weeks.

As for first bike..... I'm guessing it will be the usual cheapy, such as Kymco vsr or a Lexmoto LXR. I'm not sure if they will be any good at this price level, but i guess the warranty will give some piece of mind. However - I am open to advice for first learner bike!

Cheers
Neil

If you’re going to do your DAS then don’t bother getting a 125cc bike at all. I’m doing my DAS and bought a 125cc after I did my CBT. Before I did, all the guys on here told me to not bother but I ignored it and got one anyway. In hindsight they were totally right: getting a 125cc is a waste of money no matter how you try to sell the idea of it to yourself.

As life is cyclic you’ll probably ignore this like everyone does (including myself!) and get a bike then a few months done the line be thinking “why the fuck did I get this brand new bike and now I need to sell it because I want a real motorbike”.

And thus the cycle continues Laughing

No the DAS course includes lesson/ practice days before tests on the full size motorcycle you’ll use during both MOD 1 and MOD 2 tests

There is a definite split between those who think spending a few months on a 125 did a world of good for thier confidence and those who pretty much regretted not going straight to full license it's a personal thing. As odd as it may seem to a learner (and you will notice this straight away if you go das) is that larger bikes are actually more confidence inspiring when riding and also if you are 6ft and 18st like me better get used to the sound of a 125 engine screaming when trying to get above 50 on a slight incline Razz

Also dont worry about the day. My CBT I was the oldest 49 there was 2 guys in thier mid 30's 3 guys in thier 20's and one teenager and we all had a great day. Once you are on the bike you will forget about everything else believe me.

not so much if you buy a used 125 - you're probably not going to lose that much at all - few hundred quid at most - worth it because you save by having fewer lessons on the 600

Even in the 90s when I taught CBT and DA, younger students were rare, most people were in their 30s and 40s.

When I did my training and bike test in the early 80s, all my fellow riders were teenagers. Times have changed.

Do your CBT first, see how you feel. But the Fat Angry Kiltwearer has already nailed it (I was the one that told him so Laughing ).

If you do go for a 125 - second hand, mainstream brand, buy on condition. You'll not lose much on it unless you pay well over the odds when buying it.

Embarassed guilty as charged m'lud

Mate looking at Autotrader old Jap 125's are going for fortunes. Only one within 30 miles of me is a 2013 CBF125 that's being punted for £2,200. That 7 year old Jap bike is more expensive than a brand-new Chink bike that will come with at least a two year warranty.

I bought a wrecked 125 to keep the costs down, fixed it up and took ~3 weeks to realise its limits and hanker for doing the full test. And that's before even sitting on a "proper" bike. However, it was still useful to have a few months on a small bike so no regrets.

There is a huge gulf between a 125 and a bigger bike.

After a day and a half on a 125 I wasn’t sure if motorcycles were for me. I know have a 650 and a full licence. Having gone the DAS route I’m glad I didn’t spend money on a 125.

And at 49 you are a yoof!

Welcome to BCF.
