Having looked, you're right, they've all gone through the roof

Suzuki did a clean sheet redesign of their 200 and came up with the X5, which had horizontally split cases, CDI ignition, proper electric start and 3 phase AC charging as well as being quite a bit lighter.

I had one of those back in the day, not much quicker than the KH100 it replaced and the electric start that would only work with fresh plugs in. Also used to get me stopped a lot by the BiB for no reason other than being a 5hit 200cc twin...

What about a Ural (to upset the BMW owners) or a Jawa ?

Has budget been mentioned?

After a few weeks of pulling miracles out my arse getting two old Hondas running I've decided if I were to ever get another classic bike it wouldn't be something with a bank of 4 interlinked carbs!

What's got ez-mode maintenance, reasonable parts availability and pre-1981 ('82 at a push) for the heritage discounts. The Benley CD200 on the "eBay's worst" thread is tempting but it'd need to be happy to do 60 on NSL roads on occasion (i.e. sunny afternoon, heading to Box Hill.)

I still lust after a Z1000 or Z650 but prices have gone stupid plus I got a severe reality check on the affordability of old UJM's with my CB 750 SOHC F2, nothing was cheap to repair on that unless it was an F2 exclusive part in which case it was just rare af.

As others I recommend something simple i.e. a commuter twin of the era or an MZ.

They are Hitachi carbs. I had one. It was quite nice to ride for a ~£500 bike. The carbs are a problem. It's now old enough that they need a proper rebuild and new throttle shaft seals. Good luck finding them.

I was on the looking for a bank of carbs from something else that could be made to fit, then the bike got nicked and I no longer had that problem to deal with.

As for OP, standard answer, CB250RS. Check for rust in the frame behind the engine, between the footpegs. It rots away to nothing.

Not forgetting the YICS ports that require the making of a special tool (good luck finding an original Yamaha part) to balance them correctly.

It was a shame that bike came to a sticky end, it had some unique qualities.

As for the OP question, I don't know what I would buy - everything seems to have an extra tax on it now, be it 2T, weird beard or just age related.

It's the same thing with cars, doesn't matter what it is, if it's old, it's worth mega bucks (according to the seller) and I don't know where it will end.

Find something you like the look of, do your research as to how much it might cost to fix it up, then stick a wet finger in the air and pray.

Usual proviso - don't gamble more than you can comfortably afford to lose.

Regarding budget, nothing to throw down right now (beyond snapping up some stupidly priced bargain) but realistically I'm thinking of setting aside up a bag for something a bit wrecked and slowly fix it up. That and I've just shelled out on all the gear for a full service of my old Skoda which is about 2 years overdue Shocked

Probably not a good time right now 'cos I think this summer will be buzzing with new bikers. Come the autumn though a lot of ppl will have got over it and have to get back to work. We shall see!

Something looking 90% there I'd respect and restore back to factory but anything badly wrecked I'm going to rat out and try some mad stuff... I'm wondering what would happen with a simple 250 and retro fitting EFI just for the craic Laughing

If I had the money, I'd definitely go for the 650, a ten times better bike. But then I'd fit 750 head and barrels, bore it out to 810, fit RGV front and rear ends, and maybe a turbo Twisted Evil

If I had the money... Laughing

But then, if I had the money, I'd probably just go for the modern Z900RS.

Enfield ticks most of those boxes. Ease of maintenance? Valve clearances take about 5 minutes, involve 2 spanners and don't require any form of actual measuring device.

Actually there is decent aftermarket support fro these in the US - see XJBikes.com and most parts are available (throttle shaft seals even) - oversize piston are the biggest issue and even new rings are a king's ransom - luckily they are not often needed. Perceived wisdom is that the YICS tool is not really needed and you can balance carbs without

I thought a CD175 (70s commuter but oozing with retro charm) might be the answer.. then I saw the prices 2k minimum!! 4k if you want a shiney one.

I could get a YZF750 for that money FFS.

I'd go for the CD175, especially with the Rickman accessories, proper period piece.

46000 miles! It's probably fine, but it seems on the high side for a single. Don't know what's already been done re: piston a rings, or how much room is left for further work, or even if parts are still available.

Basically the same as a DR400, I would be surprised if someone like Wiseco didn't do an oversized piston for it.

It's fair to assume that the benefits of getting something over 40 years old (no MOT requirement, free tax, no ULEZ charge) are outweighed by the cost of the bike in the first place.

To get a more classic riding experience I think you need to go back further. 80s Japanese bikes don't ride very differently to modern ones. Similar engines and frames, crap suspension and brakes. Lots of annoying little things to fix.

If what you really want is an unusual riding experience, go with something Stinkwheel recommends. Or a pre-evo Harley sportster. It won't lose any value, but it will cost a lot more than it should be worth.
