I’m amazed that no-one has mentioned doing advanced courses such as IAM or the like. I take it that none of the previous riders have done or considered it but it certainly makes you a ‘quicker’ rider and safer whilst doing it. Just a thought.

It's like someone else's choice of bike. Whatever makes you feel happy is what you should ride. If you want to take extra training and you feel better, that's great as well. The OP was asking for subjective experiences and accounts. That sort of language makes a lot of sense in a discussion like this one. On the other hand, making assertions of fact about things that aren't proved but which could nevertheless be measured and proved or disproved wouldn't help. What he's asking is, "what led up to you feeling like you're competent and quick". If I may suggest, your response might read, "taking advanced training made me feel quicker when riding on the road". If you've got track times to share then surely that's a different topic. We're all trying to have a good time on bikes in our own way.

I have to admit I have been riding for 20+ years and while I do appreciate those that feel track days have helped them in their riding skills. I would advise anyone who does want to ride a bit quicker and be progressive in traffic on today’s roads, and still have fun at the same time, doing the advanced rider course is well worth it. I am not making assumptions on any drivers but I have noticed a lot of drivers are not as aware of other road users, mainly because of lock down and people not driving as much as they used to. The advanced rider helps to make you more aware of the other road users, I found it helped me greatly in being able to judge what a driver was going to to do before they did it.

Safety first guys.

That’s my other half who just posted. We’ve both done IAM advanced courses and she is no slouch on her Crosstourer. We’ve travelled thousands of miles together both locally and on the continent and can both attest to the improvement in safety and progressive riding skills you get with the advanced riding course. Not a single biker friend would class her as slow, me neither.
Worth the time and effort.

I think I'd do it for engagement, if I had a Youtube channel. E.g. do a series of ill-advised maneuvres and call it advanced riding.
Not sure who would take the bait though. This world must surely have a place in it for me to be senpai to some kohai. It just won't do for people to ride around and have fun on their own without appreciating my innate superiority. Laughing Laughing Laughing

I'm ambivalent about advanced stuff (iam, rospa, etc.) for necessarily making someone a faster rider. Safer, yes probably. Smoother, quite possibly. But 'seat time' is as important. Not a great deal of point taking fortnightly observed rides if the advice and guidance that's doled out isn't practised as often as possible in between.

I might even go so far as to say that, because being relaxed on the bike (not gripping the bars tightly, being able to keep your eyes on 'full beam' and always look as far ahead as possible in order to deal with stuff before it happens, and generally being loosened up physically) is what more than anything leads to a smooth ride. Getting out on a bike as often as possible is what will prevent myopic riding, stiff inputs and machine control, and general clunky riding. If you want to use youtube to get some advanced pointers (Mike Roberts' channel, Roadcraft Nottingham, etc. etc.) to supplement maximised seat time, I'm sure that can only help.

I think what improved my riding was actually green lane riding on a trail bike - you have to look ahead and pick a line, and 30mph can feel pretty fast at times. I did some advanced stuff as well, and that too made a contribution. I also tried to own and ride a range of different bikes, and again that helped. Also, as much as anything, I tried to ride as wide a selection of roads regularly (although not a great deal of motorway shit because it's so soul destroying). But if I felt a bit stressed by towns and cities, I'd go out on Friday at 5.00pm and get filtering. Now it doesn't bother me at all. And again it's being relaxed that leads to better obs and smoother riding - and as a general point, it's a case of the old adage 'slow is smooth, smooth is fast.'

Buy an old goldwing, cane the hole off of it for five years, everything else will be a doddle after that.

Oh right, hi there! What was your favourite tool for the job? I've preferred Fazer 1000s and a 350YPVS Smile

I'm not sure that my preference for naked bikes would provide the right tools for such precision artistic work. Razz

On the contrary I find I’m slowing down (relatively) now. If 17year old me had been able to insure a Panigale I think my life expectancy would have been somewhat reduced. 30 years later (and more than few motorcycle based scars) I’ve realised I’m not immortal....
