It's easy to dwell on how a bike looks from the front - and we probably most of us tend to factor that into how well it looks generally, above other angles. Then side on - that matters too. But the back of the bike is obviously going to figure into its aesthetic appeal - but is often neglected, I reckon.

I have to say that, being a fan of symmetry, the four-into-two-into-one exhaust system that's dominated bikes' back ends for so long now, isn't something I ever really look at and think "phwooar". As such.

I suppose because symmetry is synonymous with balance, really - and of course, so much of biking is about balance. In any case, I like two pipes. Four's a bit showy. One's cock-eyed. So something like a Blackbird - understated booty - but suggests things could interesting quite promptly. With very little in the way of actual effort being expended.

Those Beneilli 900 Tornados are always fun to see, though. If you're behind one, you half expect the twin underseat turbines to start coughing out chunks of pheasant and rabbit that have been sucked into the airbox.

But I think my favourite might be an '06 to '10 Tuono - on Akros, igwos. Twin pipe, nice tail piece plastics, unobtrusive indicators, neat cover over the pillion seat. Exotically cast swingarm. Bit of a mudguard - enough to protect decency, but certainly not overdressed. All in all a good looking back end.

Just recently, these brackets that bolt onto the rear spindle or whatever is going on - the number plate held on with black plastic arms. Wtf. So many bikes look appalling as a result. I get why it happens - because new rules. Tyre must not extend beyond blah blah. Terrible look though. E.g. MT09, CB1000R et al. Yikes.

Good question!

It was the symmetry of the triple underseat exhausts that really sold me on the Sprint 1050. And it's the main reason I wouldn't buy the GT version...

My references are all from about 20 years ago.

I remember being very impressed by the rear end of the 2003 Yamaha R1 when it first came out - at the time it looked very minimalist and futuristic - like the rear end of a spaceship.

https://i.ibb.co/0Zw4xN0/e5CftIn.jpg

MV Agusta F4 - pure Italian exotica from 20 years ago - where do you start?

https://i.ibb.co/2N04pcd/Mv-Agusta-pos-01.jpg

I always thought Suzuki did a good job with the SV1000 rear end with the LED strip lights and twin exhausts - at the time it looked fresh, modern and original.

One of the reasons I wanted an S2r was because of the rear, admittedly this is its best side though

https://i.imgur.com/cS1L7ZB.jpg

The original R1 looked so thin, fragile and elegant compared to everything else at the time, the SRAD screamed 'race bike', both good calls.

What I don't get is the current trend of having a tiny seat unit that looks like it's already been hacked down, Suzuki Katana, CB1100r etc as I think that they look odd

front looks great - not as great as the zx7r p3 but close; however, the back is bulbous and silly

That is so so beautiful Wub

I do love underseat exhausts on some bikes. My Street Triple, once I replaced the standard silencers, I thought was gorgeous.

Anyway, I give you my old 1500 Goldwing from many years ago. Who couldn't fall in love with a back end like that. Thumbs Up

Where's the goldwing? All I can see is the back end of what looks like aussie road train.

No have idea really, I just think that there's something about it. It is totally imbalanced but perhaps that's part of the appeal and when you look closer you can seen that the cans run parallel to the seat / frame and the ends line up with the rear light so it seems like someone may have given it a bit of thought when designing it and that works (for me).

My previous Monster had high level pipes when I bought that but they were quickly changed for low level ones as I think that the high levels just look wrong. Again, another clean and tidy rear.

https://i.imgur.com/59eoVmx.jpg

And then you look at the mess that is the new Monster and have to wonder where it all went wrong... Mr. Green

SRAD, though it's marmite and plenty of owners go to effort to fit a later K series arse.

I like the kicked up, clearly wrong looking rears on my Bullets too. Though that's not factory I did that for practical reasons.

I've always been partial to the floating tail light arrangement on the HP2

KTM RC8 has to be the one of the most striking and raddest rear ends on a production bike.

There's some good choices in here, however most of the really nice ones would be ruined by a numberplate.

Stinkwheel's is missing one
Droog's KTM RC8 doesn't appear to even have a mount for one

Vracktal's HP2 and Musketeer's Fireblade at least are road legal and still look good.

MarJays Yamaha thing looks cool with the pipes protruding from the bodywork.
