All true but
the admittedly amazing 64 core AMD Ryzen threadripper is what? 5 grand?
and the Xeon 5140 you'd pick up for a fiver or less
'there's many a good tune played on an old fiddle' as they say
or, more bcf related..
you dont need a Hyabusa to deliver pizzas
I believe the Xeon 5140 uses an LGA771 socket
so a better affordable cpu might be available
some research would need to be done though.
I recall using a site where you can input the mobo
details and it will give cpu upgrade options.
I used it to find and buy a cheap ASUS mobo to run the Core2quad cpu
and memory from a crappy Foxconn mobo with a fooked BIOS chip
It only has to run win7/32 and cnc machine related stuff and works a treat, all for £25 or so.
EDIT:
found it

Interesting figures and info Im-a-Ridah and WD Forte, thanks! It definitely gives me an idea of just how jurassic my dinosaur desktop is - yeah - the HP XW8400 is conclusively outclassed by the contemporary hardware, but (as WD Forte implies) I think this PC will be well up to handling windows 10 and basic business software (internet linked graphical charting software which updates in real time etc) well into the future.
It was originally designed for a professional video editing suite - and could handle documentary length programmes containing thousands of cuts, renders, motion, audio effects etc which required significantly more processing and graphics resources than the stuff I'm going to be using it for, I reckon it should be more than adequate for a few years. |

Old Thread Alert!
