Yes, if we are talking about the quantum level. Normally at the macroscopic level something can appear to be 1 or 0, however at quantum levels there is superposition and entanglement so it can be 1 or 0, both or neither.

Think of it like a coin. At macroscopic level you can see it as one face - heads or tails. At the quantum level the coin can be heads, tails, both or none as if it was perpetually spinning at infinite speed.

Nice analogy. Following on from that taking a high speed photo of the spinning coin seems to resolve the heads/tails question without really achieving anything Smile

Brings about the interesting question that if the coin was spinning at infinite speed, how would you take a photograph of it? Theoretically infinite velocity is possible at quantum levels as it's position cannot be defined. Furthermore from what I have read (I am not a Quantum Physicist - just a curious Engineer) entangled particles exchange information instantaneously (thus breaking the speed of light).

In this context for any observers I mean "information" in the physics sense.

Reminds me that there is a fantastic video by Kurzgesagt on YouTube that goes into the Information Paradox:

As soon as you observe it the waveform collapses and its position or its speed (depending on which metric you are observing) become fixed.

It occurs to me that obesity is a much more insidious affliction than society would like to suggest. "I eat 'cos I'm depressed, I'm depressed 'cos I'm fat..." and at the same time you've painted yourself into a corner cutting off the escape route of exercise (which is often an effective, drug-free treatment for depression.)

The same could be said about a dodgy hip or knee. It needs to get sorted ASAP.

As this appears to be the latest in a line of threads for insomniacs (and it just happens to be the one I'm reading right now) might I just say that it's so quiet here I have just heard a cow fart. Makes a change from the noise the deer make when they're browsing in the field outside my window...

Think about the fact that when you look up at the stars, you're not looking at them in real time, you're looking at them as they were billions of years ago as that's how long it's taken their light to reach us.

Think of it on the grander cosmic scale that the actual universe is bigger than the universe we can observe as the galaxies we observe now have moved and expanded in the tens of billions of years that it's taken for their light to reach us and that it is literally impossible for humanity to ever reach them because the distance they have travelled is so great that even if humanity could travel at the speed of light, the time taken to reach them would be so great that all the thermodynamic free energy in the universe would already be expired.

Think that in billions of years from now, humanity (if it exists) will not be able to observe the cosmic background radiation and that to them the combined Milky Way and Andromeda super-galaxy will seem like the only thing in the entire universe.

Think about how we are already at the beginning of the end of the universe. That star formation is decreasing and that approximately 95% of all stars that will ever exist - already exist.

https://www.naoj.org/en/results/2012/11/05/2386.html

In the fullness of time and in the face of the universe we are nothing. As a human our life is extremely short, not even a blink in time. Makes you think why do we fight and argue with each other when our time is absolutely precious and as it is your one and only life you should be fucking living it.

The principle is right, the timescales are way off. All of the individual stars you can see are in our galaxy, and without a good, large aperture telescope, you're only going to be seeing stars down to a magnitude of 6.5. The furthest one you're going to see is around 4000 light years distant which means you would be looking at it as it was 4000 years ago.

On a grander scale, the Andromeda and Triangulum galaxies can be seen with the naked eye with suitably dark skies and they are approximately 2.5 million and 2.7 million light years distant so you're seeing them as they were 2.5 and 2.7 million years ago respectively.

The observable limit of the universe is some 46 billion light years so the most distant objects we could see would be as they were 46 billion years ago. The universe itself has expanded to a size reckoned to be some 90 billion light years in diameter. The expansion is not restricted by the speed of light - that only applies to objects within the universe, not the universe itself.

Plus any other galaxies in the cosmic neighbourhood that succumb to gravitational attraction. The Andromeda galaxy will combine (collide gives the wrong idea) with us in around 4.5 billion years, just as the Sun is in it's final death throes.

This ^^

While (with current knowledge) one cannot traverse space-time at the speed of light that speed limit does not apply to space-time itself. Therefore objects can technically move away from each other (in a classical sense) at >speed of light but that's because space-time is expanding between them.

Notice I keep mentioning space-time as they are one and the same thing. Is a large mass distorting the space around it to create a gravity well or slowing the flow of time? Both! There is no such thing as gravity or time they're just labels for effects our feeble human minds perceive about space-time.

Anyhoo, that space-time is not limited by Einstein's lightspeed limit gives me hope that something like a warp drive might happen. Certainly the mathematicians say yes... if you could harness the power of an entire star Shocked

Isn't that something most kids contemplate in their early teens? I've had nearly 40 years to expand upon your noted observations, hence the banal comment on a cow's fart. Laughing
