Hi
I have bought a Honda C50m 1972 6v (for French market with electric start apart from that it is C50 I think)
I have two questions I bought a new gel battery for C50 but it does not have enough oomph for the electric start although the bike starts fine on kick.
Also is any C50 engine a straight replacement if ever needed in future i.e one without the electric start. Any help would be appreciated. Cheers Chris

Assuming the battery has a suitable rating for the bike (and it would be hard to find one that doesn't), have you charged it up? If not, charge it and see if it works. If it still doesn't work, have a look at the starter motor. May just have jammed or worn out brushes.

As for the engine, I would expect anything from the C50/70/90 range to drop right in as far as engine mounts and chain run are concerned. Differences in wiring are to be expected across the years.

First thing I'd do is check ground continuity
then whip out the starter, clean it up especially the commutator
and bung some new brushes in.
A 6V starter will draw twice as much current from the tiny battery than
a 12v equivalent so be harder on brushes and need a feckin good clean commutator and ground path back to the battery to work well.

Two things
I have despite working in the trade a LONG time never worked on a 6v electric start cub but the 12v electric start was always an issue from cold WE always advised kicking in the morning

Join the c90 club lots of experts some will have experienced a 6 v electric start
