(Skip to past the black line at the bottom of my post if you don't want my life story Razz )

Hi Everyone I'm 16 I've just passed my CBT... Before you go ahead and flame me to death... I'm not some arrogant ped boi I'm just looking to get to my modern apprentership work placement cheaply and effeicently like hell I'm going to rely on public transport.

Anyways, I got my bike it's a Piaggio Nrg. It's 2nd hand with 1200 miles on the clock it's all good especially for the price I paid.. But it's de-restricted.

Now am I right in thinking I can't ride derestricted till I'm 17? If so when I turn 17 do I have to alert my insurance that I've derestricted it or anything because I'm 17 in a few months and due to the winter time I doubt my ped will be getting much use, As if it's icey (which it normally is around here in winter) I'll get a lift from my mate to work.

What I'm hoping to do is due to the fact I'm not like some of the prats down my road who find it fun going 65 mph+ on their poor little air cooled 50 without crash helmets, I could keep it derestricted and not get caught? (I know it's a risk)

I actually need the extra power as I consider myself well built... not fat Embarassed and having the bike restricted as I live in an area with a few hills makes it a bit dodgy going up them.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------

Well the real point in this topic is this: 1. When I'm 17 what do I have to do to be able to legally ride my ped de-restricted? and 2. If I did get pulled over and the police tell me the ped shouldn't be derestricted what will they do in the way of a penalty does it depend on why they pulled me over for example if it was a routine check would I still get my ass handed to me in the way of a fine or would they tell me to get it rerestricted.

Where i am i have not once been stopped for going over 30 the only thing that changed when mine was de restricted is that you really have to watch out for police traffic cars and speed cams, me and all off my mates are derestricted you just ahve to be discreet, which by the sound off it you will be, you get told all the stuff in the cbt about how you shouldnt do it, there are risks in that legally your insurance and licence is invalid and therefore if you cause an accident your insurance will just dump you in it, but if your prepared to take the risk it is very unlikely you ll get caught.

Pal, if you are level headed then I feel I should state the obvious which is you will be riding without insurance if you derestrict it.

Also yeah, while your restricted you'll be in a dangerous situation on an under-powered bike. I think the rule sucks as those things are dangerous enough without adding to that not being able to keep up with traffic.

Personally pal I'd put up with it till your 17 and in the mean time as your slower take the opportunity to take in everything around you and build some road sense.

Oh, congrats on your pass.

Hiya, Thanks for the advice guys. When I turn 17 I'll probably still be stuck with my 50 for a few months due to my small wage Mad But if I was to play by the book and get it derestricted at 17 would I have to do anything like inform my insurance company or something like that?

I think it all depends on the power increase a derestriction would give it..

I think when i was getting insurance for my scooter i was asked if i had a racing exhaust on my scooter (those would give a couple of BHP maximum?) - so basically anything over the power a fart would give you needs to be declared...

Very Happy

Offically you're meant to inform them about any modifactions to it, so expect that includes de-restriction.

Thanks for all the help guys you've all been great! Just one more thing to legally use it derestricted will i have to take another test at 17?

Edit: (AdamBoyle) It was restricted to 30mph naturally, But because it's derestricted now I can get it to 50mph (going by speedo) on the flat.

Your CBT is valid for two years and once you are 17 you are then automatically allowed to ride anything up to 125cc and up to 14.6bhp, so yes you can ride your de-restricted ped at 17 without doing any further tests etc. Thumbs Up

Nice one , I think I'm going to keep it derestricted and take the risk like I said before I'm not some mad ped boi, I Just need something that will get me from A-B preferably with a little more throttle than 30 mph restricted mopeds are dangerous especially on A roads and hills. Well not long till I'm 17 now anyway Very Happy
