You have to feel sorry for residents losing their homes and people being killed, but one of these days we're going to see a much bigger tragedy, whether it be the destruction of Naples if (when?) Vesuvius reawakens, or something on an even grander scale like Yellowstone. The former - well, you want to build a major city virtually on the flanks of a volcano there is plenty of evidence to show the destructive power of in the past? The latter...well, possible extinction event, might as well build in the middle of it for all the good a bit of distance would do ____________________ Chickenystripgeezer's Biking Life (Latest update 19/10/18) Belgium, France, Italy, Austria tour 2016 Picos de Europa, Pyrenees and French Alps tour 2017 Scotland Trip 1, now with BONUS FEATURE edit, 5/10/19, on page 2 Scotland Trip 2 Luxembourg, Black Forest, Switzerland, Vosges Trip 2017

The fertile land around volcanos is the draw.
Much like the land in river estuaries.
For sure farm it but don't plan on living there for ever. Or if you do build, keep an eye out for the vengeance of mother earth. ____________________ Disclaimer: The comments above may be predicted text and not necessarily the opinion of MCN. |

That very thought had occurred to me. ____________________ Chickenystripgeezer's Biking Life (Latest update 19/10/18) Belgium, France, Italy, Austria tour 2016 Picos de Europa, Pyrenees and French Alps tour 2017 Scotland Trip 1, now with BONUS FEATURE edit, 5/10/19, on page 2 Scotland Trip 2 Luxembourg, Black Forest, Switzerland, Vosges Trip 2017

I would imagine the top of the skull becomes quite overdeveloped. ____________________ Chickenystripgeezer's Biking Life (Latest update 19/10/18) Belgium, France, Italy, Austria tour 2016 Picos de Europa, Pyrenees and French Alps tour 2017 Scotland Trip 1, now with BONUS FEATURE edit, 5/10/19, on page 2 Scotland Trip 2 Luxembourg, Black Forest, Switzerland, Vosges Trip 2017

The thing is, people can make predictions all they want, even geologists and volcanologists. But they don't actually know, are just giving a best guess on a phenomenon known to take even the wisest heads by surprise from time to time.
Just like extinction event-sized meteorites* - who knows how many there might really be out there, and whether they've got our name on them?
*Yeah, I know, meteorite = body that has actually fallen to Earth. Couldn't think of the right term. You know, big lumps tearing around out there, ready to wipe us all out. ____________________ Chickenystripgeezer's Biking Life (Latest update 19/10/18) Belgium, France, Italy, Austria tour 2016 Picos de Europa, Pyrenees and French Alps tour 2017 Scotland Trip 1, now with BONUS FEATURE edit, 5/10/19, on page 2 Scotland Trip 2 Luxembourg, Black Forest, Switzerland, Vosges Trip 2017

Given that the average temperature of lave is around 1000C and it cools quite slowly, nobody is going to be walking on it for long |

Geologists and volcanologists tend to give predictions in the order of days. It's impossible to put a long term forecast on magmatic movements.
With Yellowstone it's the interval between previous eruptions that are used - what something like 100,000 years means is it could be tomorrow, it could be in 100,000 years time.
Oh and if people are worried about large caldera eruptions, then maybe we shouldn't mention the Long Valley caldera, the Valles caldera, the Lake Toba caldera (that one nearly got humanity the last time it erupted), the Talpa caldera, the Aira caldera - oh and forget Vesuvius, that's involved with a large caldera too called the Phlegraean fields because that one is currently producing some alarming signs... |

We will have a flood (Noahism).
The waters will recede during the coming Ice Age.
N. America and N. Eurasian Continents will be ice desserts.
Homo Sapiens will migrate back down to Africa and Southern America.
All before Yellowstone as much as farts.
And then.
