Must be related to my recent 5G mind control chip Covid jab but I've had one of these gadgets fitted and TBH I find it fascinating.

If you're not familiar with them they give you an estimate of your electricity usage in pennies per hour. "Great! Instead of fretting over my bill each quarter I can stress out 24/7!" Well yes, I wouldn't get one if you're of a nervous disposition Rolling Eyes

Anyhoo, since all the filament and halogen bulbs went in the bin years ago I've got LED & fluorescent lighting, fridges & freezers, TVs, computers - all the usual stuff - running and apparently they all cost feck all to run. Whoever said TVs on standby are killing the planet can go fuck themselves Mad

My computer costs a fair bit to run, but it's not your average shop bought jobby.
Old (CRT) TV's were woefully inefficient, both on standby and in operation. Calculate the energy over a year and it was an noticeable amount. Then multiply that by all the telly's and it was a fair chunk. New LED TV's are something in the order of microamps on standby, so not bad at all.

I went down the route of Mini-ITX and the lighter Wattage Intel CPUs. Does make a difference, ~2p per hour even when the Nvidia is on full tilt.

Did the obsessive energy usage test thing a while back.
My pc uses 4p/hour and half of that is the 30" monitor
My new Fridge freezer uses feck all compared to my old one
about 1p/hour, not that it runs continually
All led lights on 1p/hour
kekko 54p/hour
toaster 16p/hour
microwave 29p/hour
phone chargers not charging, feck all, dont show up
When charging, about a penny per hour

Still gaming on a ridiculously over clocked 3770k, I don't want to know how much power it eats. It actually allows us to turn the heating off upstairs when I do long sessions in the winter Laughing

I suppose that's a small point in favour of consumerism: replacement products are mandated to be more efficient than their predecessors.

Interesting - so am guessing a laptop is half to two thirds that? Suppose it depends on size and age. New, small-ish one perhaps half that.

I had a smart meter fitted a few years as i was interested in tracking my gas usage. It then turned out they could not fit the gas smart meter because my gas meter is on the other side of the house and the transponder is to weak to send the reading to the main unit at the leccy meter. So total waste of time. Maybe I should ask if they can sling a cable over the house to connect them Laughing

You very quickly get over seeing how many planet murdering watts of electric your using as you burn your Tofu burger. They really are the most useless bits of technology, at least from the consumer in point of view.

The savings to be made are many fold but simple.

Reduce Usage.

Reduce Loss.

Monitor you costs PKWH.

Wear more clothes in winter.

We didn't have heating in every room when growing up.

None of us died yet.

Maybe worth asking again. They're on the 2nd or 3rd generation of tech now so the signal might get through.

For example 10 years ago I just couldn't a Vodafone signal in my house at all, I had to get one of those vimto femto cell things. Now I get a couple of bars of 4G.
