If the plugs on one cylinder is fouled, I would be looking at the injector for that cylinder. If it's both cylinders, then something is telling the injectors to squirt in too much fuel. Are both plugs fouled?

Yes both are fouled.

After a bit of poking around CMSNL, I'm still stumped.

High fuel pressure could explain it, but it looks like the fuel pressure is all handed by the in-tank pump with a simple one-line feed system. Can't see a fuel pressure regulator in there, so I assume the pump is also handling that.

There is a separate air temperature sensor listed, and it's cheap enough at about £15, part no. 211760048
However, if there was a problem here I would expect the ECU to have a code stored.

To dump in that much fuel, it has to either think it's very cold, on wide open throttle, or very high fuel pressure.
It is possible that the inlet temp sensor isn't working, but even then it should clean up when the engine warms up and the engine temp sensor shows normal operating temp.
High fuel pressure is possible but I don't see how, unless you changed the pump for something unsuitable.
Wide open throttle is down to the TPS, which you measured and found in spec.

At this point I would unplugging sensors to try to get it running in limp-home mode (if it has such as thing) or just basic settings ignoring some of the inputs (if it does that) to see if the problem can be isolated down to a sensor. If you're lucky, the system may be dumb enough to just run on a basic map using minimum sensors.

Unplugging the O2 sensor does cause the FI error to show, but it doesn't seem to affect the running. At least it doesn't seem to affect mine. The acceleration, rev range etc. seems to be the same.
Having said that, mine's been pretty well bodged over the years (before I bought it...only minor bodges since!!)

I think Pete probably has the answer. Dirty/stuck injectors.

So far we have looked at too much fuel. Have you checked for not enough air? I know you are not stupid but we have all seen the absent minded guy fitting an air filter still in the plastic wrapping for example. Is there anything like a rag sat in the inlet perhaps?

Yep everything checked.
2nd hand throttle bodies and ECU are here now so hopefully I will get it back together this week.
