Hej,

Couple days ago bought a 2006 Yamaha XJR 1300.
As a new owner and rider, kind of just winged it and bought the one I can afford in the style i liked.

In general motorcycle runs smooth after got used to using choke and throttle stop screw. (setting to manual suggested ~1000 rpm idle)
But have one big concern regarding temperature.
Dont have built in temperature gouge, but it feels hot and it is.
Used external infrared thermometer to measure temperature.

After nice fast 20 minutes drive : ~120c engine (250f), 180 exhaust, 108 radiator

image5.jpeg image7.jpeg image8.jpeg

10 minutes idle after drive :~150c engine (250f), 195 exhaust, 108 radiator
image0.jpeg image1.jpeg image2.jpeg

Manual states normal range 60-105C
Checked radiator seems not be damaged and there i no active fan or any liquid container.
Is this normal for this type of old air cooled bike or there is a big issue with the engine and I got screwed badly Smile ?
If there is an issue, how urgent it is and what it could be.

Thank you very much for you input and help, will be much needed and appreciated.

Funny, I was enjoying the sunshine in the City today and I was ruminating on air-cooled engines. Every other traffic light my cooling fan kicked in and the temp went from 105 to ~90 so 60 to 105 on an air-cooled engine seems... optimistic!

Pull out the thermostat. It's clearly not working.

A new rider on a 1300cc (1250cc really)??????????

Where are you in this world.

"""10 minutes idle after drive""" (ride) is crazy for an air cooled bike with todays crap fuel and weak fuel / air mixtures.

First thing is to replace all the coolant. Worry about the thermostat later Wink

Coolant has no effect on temperature, actually it decreases cooling ability compared to water only.

If you knew your bikes you would know that the XJR1300 is oil cooled and has no thermostat.....

The engine is a later version of the earlier FJ1100 and 1200 and has a radiator above the exhaust pipes

Having ridden my FJ-3XW down to Italy it has been very hot, especially when we got lost in 37c heat trying to get out of Verona.I did not think to check engine or radiator temperatures at the time, but at the earliest opportunity at a friend's house in Germany I changed the oil as it is this which suffers in extreme heat.

As for the situation that the OP finds himself/herself in,I would be looking at the easy to check components like the spark plugs and air filter, neither of which are difficult to access.Change the oil and oil filter as they are cheap to replace.
At a later date have the shim clearances checked. They are easy to change as they are shim-on-bucket.

Oops. In my defence he did say 'radiator'....

FFS BCF massive... the OP even gave us pics.

The fins on the block are for air cooling. The 'radiator' is an oil cooler. (Still helps the engine cooling.)

Air cooled engines will be strangely difficult to measure engine temps when on the side stand as they rely on the ram air providing a blast of cooling air to replace the air around the hot parts.

I would not worry. Look into aftermarket temp sensor if its really bothering you, or the dipstick replacement ones, admittedly I use those too, and usually see 60-80 while moving.

Only other thing to possibly check, I think 2006 is still carbs on the XJR? Might be worth checking nobody has dicked around with the mixture screws and leaned it way out.

to be honest i had a similar worry on my first big bike.

my CBR600 would usually be around 75 to 85c but on a warm day in heavy traffic especially stuck at red lights i would have a shock when it went to 95c and the fan kicked in.
I often seen it go to 103c ish but the fan did its job as it never really went higher.

Bikes do run pretty hot.
for peace of mind, personally i would book into a good trusted garage or even a Yammy dealer and let them look at it.

When your out on your bike, the main thing you need is confidence in your bike and tyres. Otherwise your going to end up a nervous rider.

Given this is the year we're moving to E10 (in the UK) is this good news for air-cooled engines? Ethanol burns a bit cooler than petrol Thinking
