I am not too sure if too put in question in the new bikers section or here (as I have only be biking for the last 8 month) but hey, lets ram this question here.

I am thinking about buying a bigger bike than the crappy one that I have at the moment ( my yamaha ybr deathtrap) and have seen one that I like. Problem is, is that it means to go and see it, I have to drive all the way from southend o sea (where I live, down south) to a place called tunbridge wells (even more down south), but to get their, I may have to use the motorway everyone here calls the worlds biggest car park..........The M25. (this also means going over the the dartford bridge, which will probably be windy, meaning that I will get blown over the side)

Do you lot think that slow miserable 125 cc would be appropriate on a motorway (as its top speed is about 61 mph, will go faster if going down hill or falling off a cliff) or should I go through other roads, then only use the motorway when I have a bike that is actually capable of moving at speed, and does not get blown around because it is light and slow, and the wheels are thin and stupid?

I can and would. I've ridden my 350 enfield round the M25 and it's no worse than riding any other bike round the M25.

Obviously you have a full licence? Because L-plates are not allowed on motorways.

A motorway is probably the best place for a slower vehicle because there are plenty of lanes to overtake in. Make sure you do lots of lifesavers before changing lane.

Don't go through the left hand Dartford tunnel. I did and was genuinely scared because the wagons are so close together they can't see you.

In fairness, the dynamic limits will probably be way less than the top speed of your bike most of the time anyway.

Get in front of a truck doing 50 (their alledged top legal speed) and stay there until your engine seizes.

And then get squished....

I used to ride a 100cc commuter on a motorway on occasion. I’m not dead.

yeah, I do have full license. Only problem is that I only got the license about 3 months ago, and when I was doing the bike training, I was not allowed to go on the motorway (for obvious reasons)

I can just see myself browning my pants as have never been on a bigger road than a dual carriageway on a small bike (in a car, ok through)

I will take your advise, and avoid the left hand lane of the tunnel through, as that sounds quite scary Shocked

I currently ride the best bike in the world.
The mighty suzuki address 110cc on motorways atleast twice a week.
Not gonna lie I look at those 125cc bikes with envy.

Also if your after a bike Belle Vue Motorcycles in Southend sell excellent bikes.

As long as you can maintain just below 60 mph, you have a chance , below that some silly t**t will try and run you off the carriageway while trying to pass you!

I used to go along those roads quite a bit.

Maybe I'd pass on the bridge in high winds but other than that you're only talking about Dartford to the A21. The only squeaky bum bit is just as you get off the bridge and you have all the roads merging and splitting off in short succession - lots of cars doing random "oh shit!" lane changes.

Once you get onto the M25 proper it's rather sedate and mostly downhill. If you can handle the A13 you'll be fine Smile

I wouldn't drive a 125cc on a motorway. That's because I wouldn't drive a bike at all.

I used to ride my NSR125 on the motorway on the way to University on many occasions. It won't be fun, but it will just about be doable.

A motorway is just a dual carriageway with an extra lane and no random roundabouts or right hand turns.

Safest road type for miles traversed in the uk if not the world.

If you like being stuck with the HGVs sure.
My route today took me on the M60 and M62 and it would've been miserable on a 125, horrendous if it were raining and windy.

I can see it being very useful on say the M6/M5 near Birmingham because that goes stationary on a regular basis.

Make sure the headlight is aiming correctly. If it's an old CG I'd suggest leaving the main beam on as that equates to a normal strength headlight.

Reflective Hi-Viz because on motorways, you're more likely to stick out than through town.

Crossing over the wheel tracks made by HGVs can alleviate boredom.

Did my DT125 up and don the M11, no worries and that would do 70.

My TTR250 on the other hand is really not happy or in any way comfortable over 60 and I still ride that on a 30 mile M'Way - Dual carriageway jaunt.

It's just a road, they'll go round you.

Sitting two seconds behind a lorry might be a good idea. A bit of help from his slipstream. Much, much more if you're 4' away, but don't.

Have done so on many occasions in the past.
Would do again if I needed to.

Personally I’d wear plenty of reflective apparel and a Dayglow jacket.
That’s just my choice.

I've done it a few times. A 125 wouldn't be my first choice of vehicle for the motorway, but it can be done. Keep mindful of your distance from the vehicle in front, anticipate drivers' actions, keep an assertive lane position, use the slipstreams of lorries, don't ride in anyone's blind spot, etc. You'll be tired, and you won't get there fast, but you'll get there.

ok Thanks guys, so it seems that it possible to travel on a motorway .........abiet slowly and not very appealing........but still doable....right, I will try and brave it and give it a go

The suggestion of sitting behind a lorry and wearing flashy stuff I will consider as this might help

yeah, I did see some in that place, looked nice, but I am going to avoid going back to that place .... why? I brought a car (a reasonable ford fiessta ) from them about 10 years ago.......when I brought it, I did a part exchange using an old peugot 206 that I had ...in which I 'accidentally' forgot to mention to them that the clutch was broken...and the suspension was fecked, and the steering was wonked..............lets just say about a week after I did the part exchange I got an angry phone call from them demanding to know why the feck I did not tell them these things............... Shifty

I have never really felt vunerable during the day driving a 110cc on a motorway.

It can get pretty dicy at night though when people are doing 90mph+ past you and there is no lighting and its pissing down.

Short answer - no. Less short answer - fuck no. I well remember having my vanvan - it would easily dip below 50 shown a headwind and gradient. Then again, when me and a mate went to pick my klx250 up from Huddersfield, riding it back to Howden on the M62 at a steady 60 troubled nobody and was utterly without drama of any kind. It was almost enjoyable.

Southend?

If you're happy riding on the A127, or the A13, the M25 is really no different. 70mph speed limit, though you'll regularly do much less.

Stick to lanes 1 and 2 and you should be fine. Keep your wits about you with regards to lorries, they have loads of blind spots and wont hear your horn if you beep!

As an alternative, you could take the A13 all the way in to London, cross the river at the Blackwall Tunnel and down the A2/A20. That would remove a significant amount of the M25 and be mostly 50mph limits.
