Sporadically, over the weeked there has been a "whump" sound from my kitchen, often with a hardly noticeable flash of light.

Happened quite a few times this afternoon.

Turned off all the appliances and lights, turned the cooker off at the wall, it still happened, removed the kickboards from below the cabinets, couldn't see anything obviously wrong, but it happened again, a few times, light seemed brighter.

There is an insuated cable that appears to be touching a copper water pipe. I assume this is the source. But the cooker is off at the wall.

Sometimes there is a single noise, sometimes, two or three. Can be an hour or more, or just a few minutes between it happening.

Any ideas?

Gonna phone local sparky in the morning.

pic, of what I think the source is

I'd expect more blackening with that much arcing. Slide a piece of card between for now, see if it stops.

*edit*

Also, having seen what a mains cable does to a pair of pliers, I'd have expected that pipe to be very leaky by now.

It could be managing to short to the included earth, if it has been against that pipe which vibrates and perhaps expands and contracts for years it could have damaged the internal insulation and not actually be shorting to the pipe.

If there is short to earth something ought to be tripping out almost instantly.
Which makes me wonder if it's not that at all but sounds electrical..

FUCK, that sounds like a gas leak!!! Please turn off any gas supplies till you get someone in, if you don't have gas just rule out the possiblilty of capped off pipes coming into the building are not leaking, or bottled supply pipes leaking, etc, etc

Do you have a gas fired hot water heater anywhere near? Could be that re-igniting? Be prepared for a leak that's inaccessible, and turn off from outside.

a low sounding "whump", does suggest boiler related... where is it positioned, out of interest ?

Good.

Has it stopped?

Have you got someone coming round?

Where's the flue?
Is it blocked outside?

When was it last serviced?

Sorry, Just thinking out allowed.

It's your boiler making the thumping / thud noises.

It's not about to explode in a firey ball of hot death or anything bad like that but it's letting you know that you need to get it serviced some time vaguely soon.

The boiler servicing person will know any special answers for your particular boiler. Basically it needs servicing and cleaning but you'll also see what advice they've got about keeping the boiler happy.

Dibs on your plot of land if your boiler explodes you and your house away. Thumbs Up

I suspect it may boiler/gas related too so get it checked sharpish.
It may be the peizo igniter getting tired and taking longer to ignite the gas
until a larger volume than normal is in the chamber hence the 'whump'

If your consumer unit has an RCD any shorts should plunge the house into darkness and need the RCD resetting.
RCD work by assuming an equal current on both live and neutral cables and if any earth fault occurs on any cable above say 20mA, trip within 20 milliseconds.
A short between live and neutral may not satisfy these conditons
so get it checked anyway.

If you live in a hard water area and your boiler system has never been de-scaled and flushed it could be calcite/carbonate scale build up on the water side of the boiler heat exchanger/tubes.

This prevents the heat from the gas flame getting to the water. The boiler thermostat feels that the water is not hot so increases the gas flow to make more heat.
This makes the boiler gas side blow hotter in order to heat the water.
That eventually created hot spots and thunderous expansion of the water.

Servicing the boiler should include de-scaling the heating system.
Summer time is best time to do this.
You can easily DIY it.
Chemicals from B&Q.
If you have a pressurised system you will need to buy or make a Filling Loop to allow you to refill the system from the cold supply during the drain/fill/flush/drain/fill steps.
It will take about 2hours to drain, refill and add de-scaler to the system.
Then leave it to circulate for a couple of hours Let it stay in the system for a week and switch on for an hour each day to loosen the kak.
Then let it cool and dump it down the drain.
Two or three flushes with fresh water.
Final fill and bleed.
Then dose with a protector. That will prevent it happening again.

Bikechatforums.

They'll show you a twisted subframe.

They'll also identify the need for a silver powerband.

They'll identify a badly modded cx500....

Ultimately, They'll show you a knackered boiler.

Thats how they roll..... outstanding info since 2004......

A plumber mate of mine tells me that the prongs can close up over time so that the spark becomes intermittent. This can cause the buildup and therefore the 'whump'. What he does is heat them then bend them apart again.

May also be the fan not kicking in when its meant to (if it has one on the top) - this is usually due to being old and full of filth.

Remove, regrease, replace.

its not the boiler

started happening when boier and gas was turned off

had someone out to check it anyway, happened when they were here, they said it was electrical

Trying to get a sparky to come out is exhausting, uphill struggle even getting them to return a call

Have you tried turning off the various MCBs one at a time to see if you can narrow it down?

Kitchens are sometimes on their own MCB, as can you boiler (is the boiler off at the wall or the consumer unit?

You could eliminate lights, sockets, boiler, oven/hob depending on your setup.

I had a similar thing and it turned out to be a spur that was no longer in use so they (literally) just plastered over the end of the wire.

You put up any new shelves or cup-hooks etc that are screwed to the wall and could potentially have gone through a wire?

Long shot, but...

1. Have you got a vent or extractor anywhere in the room, perhaps that leads to the outside via an external wall?
2. Has it been windy in your area lately?

we think this is it.

There are no right angles in our home due to its age, hanging a door takes half a day,.
f
The fitted kitchen is nw over 20 years old, the former owner was a DIY bodger., the bodged kitchen was replaced with the fitted kitchen.

We have narrowed it down to an area at the back of the kitchen behind the cabinets. Not on the floor by the pipe.

Also, the electrician still hasnt fixed it, and we have holes all over our kitchen wall now.
