As I've been chastised that modern day slavery is a trivial topic when it comes to Hollywood mini-celebs maybe, just maybe this subject is a wee bit more serious:

HMS Defender: What will be the fallout from Black Sea incident?

Poor choice of words on the part of BBC News Shocked Or is it...

There are as ever a lot of flash points around the world but the major powers casually banding about "use of nuclear weapons" is, AFAIK, something we haven't heard since the Cold War Sad

Absolutely nothing will come of it. In the same way nothing ultimately comes of the Russians flying strategic nuclear bombers into UK airspace over Shetland on a regular basis (and have been doing since the 1950's).

Same way nothing ultimately came of Russia sailing their aircraft carrier into the Medeterranian a couple of years back.

Lots of noise and protest, followed by discussions and diplomacy.

Do you think the armaments carried by a couple of soviet warplanes unduly concern a type 45 destroyer after the lessons we learned in the Falklands?

Do you think for one minute the Defender had no backup? I'm sure it's defences ran deeper than you'd imagine... So to speak.

All they are doing is reminding Russia not to get too comfortable about getting away with it.

That's an air defence destroyer, it has loads of ways to zap a plane. Short (~40km) and medium range (~120km) extremely agile very high speed air defence missiles, 2 CIWS which are 20-30mm robotic chainguns "cannons" designed for shooting down anti-shipping missiles, plus other "cannons" and miniguns! Even if there was a war it wouldn't go nuclear, people seem to have this weird idea that wars are all or nothing as per the cold war. Now its all about slicing the salami to get what you want.

Oooo ... that reminds me!

Whilst I was on the loose up in Norfolkshire this week, I saw something that looked vaguely like this on Wednesday, although I think it was darker, and I couldnt see any markings, it was too high up (and I am too shortsighted Laughing ).

https://im-media.voltron.voanews.com/Drupal/01live-166/styles/892x501/s3/2019-04/C09161FC-4D8F-4F77-AF21-DE7E739FBFD2.jpg?itok=JUDwh5oj

Except it was actually flying, it flew up out of some farmland rolling hills type area, over the top of us, and out towards the air bases further inland, we assumed. But it was a very funky shape. The consort I was with at the time suggested it might be a vertical take off and landing vehicle.

I have this idea that a lot of people these days are rather strangely craving some kind of apocalypse - until they get one of course!

A game of chicken with conventional weapons sounds quite entertaining but when one of the players is sitting on the largest stockpile of nuclear weapons in the known universe it kinda takes the edge off it Neutral

On the other hand, no matter how powerful your arsenal, you can only kill someone once. And if you use nukes, you have to factor in that someone might reply in kind. The nuke argument in the field of this particular situation in the Black Sea is a straw man effectively. You can stomp around shouting about how many of the things you have, but you would actually have to be quite mad to use them. Is Putin mad? I don't think so. Kim Jong Un? Quite possibly mad enough.

Oh, and this seems rather conveniently timed:

Classified Ministry of Defence documents found at bus stop

"found in a soggy heap behind a bus stop by a member of the public" could you get any more clichéd?!

Personally, I think that the reason I will never see a Third World War in my lifetime is because a fight between any of the nuclear superpowers NATO vs Russia, NATO vs China, West vs East, etc in full and earnest would extremely quickly escalate from a conventional war to a nuclear one.

Annexing other countries is a bit of a worry. Firing "warning shots" while still over the horizon and overflying in unarmed jets, not so much.

Refusing to turn the heavy bombers round when fair and square intercepted in our airspace would be a line too far too. Then we'd have to shoot the fucking thing down because our fighters are most certainly not unarmed in that scenario.

The Russians like to poke the bear to see what will happen.

What the royal navy was doing was not so much poking the bear as setting off bangers to stop it hibernating in the garden shed.

How about using a deadly chemical weapon against spies in a foreign country in a manner that could very easily harm innocent civilians?

Interestingly, during the Cold War, Russia had cached a number of weapons, radios and other materials for use by subversives all around Europe and the USA. These caches were protected by explosive devices, designed to destroy them if tampered with. Some were declared outright after the whistle was blown by Mitrokhin, a defector who had worked in the KGB archives and busily wrote down much of what he had access to before bringing it to the UK. Others have never been declared. Some were found, and the explosives found to be highly unstable, subsequently destroyed by the authorities concerned in those countries. Others have never been found.

Outside of times of actual war, I think it's the small stuff we have to be more worried about as individuals. But there again, in the new realm of cyber warfare, shutting down your hospital system or your energy supplies seems pretty worrying to me.

An observation on the documents found behind the bike sheds or whatever.

If they were dropped accidentally (which I doubt) why would....

1)n The finder take them to the BBC rather than the police?
2) Why would the BBC, a nationally owned channel that is meant to be batting for Britain, read out what the secret documents contained on national TV?

You have a different idea of what the BBC stand for than I do. I was more under the impression they're batting for the EU and themselves.

The ruskies won't strike. They want games by all side are only to test readiness.

Nuclear Bombs stop Nuclear War.
They are the ultimate deterrent.
Only a fcuking psychotic phuque-pig would launch a nuclear strike.
That fcuking wanker and Chums in N. Korea and the other shower of Spunk in Iran.
The irritant parties like ISIS Taliban and ilk need to make the stuff them self.
The psychos may provide the fringe phuque-wits with a physics package when they feel a need to.

To mis-quote some film or other, "it's not the guys with lots of nuclear weapons you need to worry about, it's the guy with one.".
