I have a tinted visor and I understand if you have one marked for daytime use only you are obliged to carry a spare clear one. That's what my riding instructor told me anyway so I've no reason to disbelieve this is the case.

Bearing in mind it's legal to ride open face helmets with no visor, but I think the legality is you have to wear eye protection such as glasses or goggles? Would you not be covered just carrying a pair of goggles under your seat just on the off-chance unlikely scenario you got pulled over and challenged by the police for not having a spare clear visor on you?

I used dark tint visors for years, never worried about the legalities, never been pulled or even ticked off for it. I only carried a clear alternative if it was either likely or possible that I may still be out when it begins to get dark.

Its not compulsory to wear eye protection when riding a motorcycle.

If you do then it must meet British Standard and display a BSI Kitemark.

Or meet a European standard offering at least the same safety and protection as the British Standard and carry a mark equivalent to the BSI Kitemark.

If the visor lets through 50% or more of the light its legal.

A tinted visor is only illegal when being used. So, having a tinted visor fitted to your helmet in the raised position is perfectly legal. Wink

Using a visor without a bs or equivalent stamp isn't illegal. Selling one is.

You have to wear a helmet legally, but you don't have to wear eye protection, it's just "advisable". So you don't need to carry goggles even with an open face. And, late at night, caught out with a dark visor, just remove it and legally, you're good. Rule 84 - https://www.highwaycodeuk.co.uk/rules-for-motorcyclists.html

As for the whole tinted visor thing, some opinions here - https://www.mcncompare.com/motorbike-insurance-guides/tinted-visors-the-law-for-motorcyclists/

There's legality, and then reality. I always carried a clear visor because I wanted to be able to see clearly. That's also the reason I used a tinted one. I've had a copper (who had pulled us over for a bollocking) specifically tell me he wasn't interested in my tinted visor, so they know it's all bullshit as much as we do, although if they're throwing the book at someone, it's available in the book I suppose.

Another issue which I'm sure not many people know about is that standard clear Pinlock visors - which must be used be a huge percentage of the riding population - are officially only legal for daytime use, by dint of their reduced light transmission. I wonder how many people pull over at dusk to de-install them?

Does a car legally have to have a windscreen? If not, simply remove it at night to neatly get around the problem.

I didn't think that there were any rules on sunglasses, which would have made the whole thing a farce from the get go, but apparently there are categories of sunglass tint, and Category 4 (the strongest tint) is unsuitable for driving. Whether that's actually illegal is unclear - https://www.theaa.com/driving-advice/safety/driving-in-sunglasses

Exactly this.

Always use my dark visor on the sunny days and only carry a clear one for reasons said above.

I think it'd more likely become a problem if you were pulled over for any other reason and failed the attitude test, the officer would more than likely be going over your bike with a fine toothed comb and not just your visor.

Amateur eh? Try doing it for a living. Takes all the fun out of it.

I've been caught out twice, unexpectedly, night time happened, and it went strangely dark. I have never carried a spare visor, and the type of roads I frequent are unlit NSLs, without cats eyes or much in the way of markings.

Lifting the visor is not an option unless you'd like a face full of moth.
It's embarrassing to be overtaken by Doris in her Micra, but following her with her useful car headlights is a godsend. Full beam helps but when a car comes the other way after switching off full beam, and the lights off the oncoming car ruining any night vision you'd built up, it almost becomes a gamble for a few seconds. Any animal by the road side is going to be invisible.

Once you hit the lit roads it's not really an issue.

I had a manic ride home after watching the sun start to go down whilst sat at a pub having a pint after a nice ride out...
Then I remembered my (not road legal) super black visor. It was kind of the opposite of a vampire trying to get back to his
coffin before the sun came up. Was a very 'spirited' journey to say the least as the light steadily faded.

I got caught out in Cornwall except it wasn't moths it was incessant drizzle (literally riding through a cloud.)

I was thinking an emergency set of goggles in the toolkit might help, those ones that are made out of a flat sheet of clear plastic and clip together to get the shape... WW2 tank commander?

Dark visors are illegal to use anyway. The 'for daytime use only' smoked visors are pointless, they don't filter out any light. I used a properly dark one for years without problem.

What's best, and what I do is to just buy a lid with an internal sun visor.

So much misinformation.

No requirement for any eye protection at all.

Primary eye protection. MUST have kitemark or equivalent CE standard marking. It must allow a minimum of 50% light transmission.

That's primary. Your secondary eye protection can be whatever the hell you want. Hence integrated sun visors, wrap-around shades etc.

My understanding with pinlocks is because they are inside the visor and are technically removable, they are not primary eye protection and therefore a huge loophole.

I personally always wear a set of safety specs anyway, either clear for night, yellow tint for low light or sunglasses. I often ride with my visor up anyway because visors are usually either steamed up or covered with flies and road dirt. The glasses mean I can pop the visor even in the rain and at least see.

I'm currently favouring bolle shades which are pretty stylish and are incidentally, CE marked eye protection anyway. Also less than a tenner.
https://cdn.aws.toolstation.com/images/141020-UK/800/52851.jpg

I have heard of incidents of overly zealous police doing someone for wearing normal (Non-CE marked) shades with an open face lid. Which while within the letter of the law, is a dick move of the highest order.

What I don't like with the internal, drop-down visors is the double reflection. ppl sometimes moan about this effect with pinlock e.g. visor+pinlock+internal = terrible.
