2010 Aprilia Shiver 750 - a shade under 19,000 miles.

In the last few days when stopped at traffic lights I am getting a strange smell from the bike and it is slightly disconcerting. It rides fine, and sounds fine, but it certainly doesn't smell like normal.

It's hard to pin down what it is exactly, there is no smoke from the exhaust, no sign of oil at the ends of the pipes, no sign of the oil level dropping. It smells fuely I suppose but it is riding fine and my mpg seems normal.

I don't want to ignore it because A) It smells bad every time I stop, and B) I'm sure something isn't right, I just can't suss what.

I've had a good look over the outside of the exhaust and I am fairly certain it is not something melting on the outside.

Any thoughts on what I should be checking?

You checked the brakes? Could be binding a bit and getting hot.

"""""""""""It smells fuely I suppose """"""

Maybe fumes venting off from the fuel cap.
Regulator / rectifiers can get hot and stink as well.

Have you got an exhaust leak somewhere or some kind of fuel drip / oil leak that's evaporating off the warm parts of the engine / exhaust?

Have a good look at the various drain/overflow hoses.

You thinking one blocked with chain crud / road crap or is kinked and forcing vapour out elsewhere?

Or it's dribbling stuff onto something hot instead of dropping it onto the road.

Airbox or associated oil breather would be my first guess it it's not obviously leaking oil onto the engine or exhaust.

Yep checked both front and back, they're a bit known for brake disc bobbin issues, but nothing wrong with my brakes at all.

I don't think it's unburned fuel, more of an exhaust gas leak I suppose but it doesn't even smell particularly like normal exhaust gas, and it seems to come from under me rather than behind.

Exhaust leak sounds more likely but I can't hear any tell tale ticking - it sounds just like normal to me.

I've had a reg/rec go before on two different bikes, I don't think it's the same sort of smell, they're a lot more acrid in my opinion - also I do enough miles that I'd have seen other issues by now I think.

Electrical stuff smells very different when burning to fuel or exhaust.

I've had an oil breather spit out oil before as it goes. Previous owner had WAY overfilled the oil and I clearly didn't check properly before riding home.

The oil is very much in the middle of the lines on the sight glass which I guess would raise the question of why it is venting/overflowing oil if that's what it is. Anyway, good suggestion to check the pipes to see if they're venting somewhere they shouldn't be, I'll have a look over the weekend.

Actually... as it goes I did spill a bit of fuel down the overflow the other morning, but it was about two weeks ago. I suppose it's plausible that it is still dripping down the pipe a bit? I'll check that too.

Actually reading through this further does suggest that when ridden hard they have a tendency to vent oil even when at the proper level. That doesn't sound entirely unlike me... Mr. Green

Ok. I'll check oil and fuel overflows over the weekend and see what I find!

Thanks for all of the suggestions so far.

Turns out it's an exhaust leak after all - 10 points to uncle fester.

Original pipes, I'd quite like something a tad fruitier sounding but I commute at about 6am and standard are noisy enough as it is for my sleepy little cul-de-sac!

Not fully sussed where the leak is from yet, either the top of the cat or the joining gasket to the silencer, the latter seems more likely but it feels like it's coming from the cat and the weld doesn't look great.
