Somebody is flying a drone withe a camera on over the back gardens of the local houses, including ours. Is this legal and would it be ok to shoot the twat down with my field target air rifle?

It's not legal if it's over a certain weight. I think it's something like 250g or something?

Shooting it down would also be illegal though.

The question I'd ask is how do the effective ranges of an air rifle and a garden hose with one finger over the end compare? And which is more likely to take a drone down...

You could get some helium balloons and put up blimps over your garden.

It could also be legitimate; Greater Manchester Police have started using a drone to follow antisocial bikers (yobs on trail bikes normally) to where they live so they can pounce on them. Makes sense, assuming the drones have the range, as keeping up with a CRF or something is nigh on impossible through alleys and across parks unless plod is riding something similar.

It is illegal to damage other peoples property, drones included.

They may be flying over their garden to practice and perfect their skills, I do this quite a lot with my drone.

So long as they are not flying dangerously there isn't a lot that can be done about it, although they should be registered with a flyer id and operator id with the CAA if they wish to remain on the right side of the law.

It's highly unlikely that they are interested in anything going on in your garden or that of your neighbours, if they are a hobbyist or even professional pilot they should abide by the drone code, if your interested check out https://register-drones.caa.co.uk/drone-code

I know everyone is getting all angsty about these but its usually for no reason as someone could just as easily pop a camera over the fence to carry out surveillance on yours or anyone property for nefarious reasons.

I do still quite like the barrage balloon concept. Maybe a upturned footy goal full of helium balloons and release them when the drone is overhead. Bonus points for being able to observe the pilot's face as it all unfolds.

I like the drone jammer suggestion. Fun and effective. Obviously, I couldn't recommend that, as it's quite likely such devices are Gaussian noise generators, and break the law on civilian uses of whole swathes of the EMF spectrum, and they can detect and track down people doing that if they want.
