Somebody is flying a drone withe a camera on over the back gardens of the local houses, including ours. Is this legal and would it be ok to shoot the twat down with my field target air rifle?

It's not legal if it's over a certain weight. I think it's something like 250g or something?

Shooting it down would also be illegal though.

Remember kids, bikes aren't like lego. You can't easily take a part from one bike and then fit it to another.

Just wait until it flies over your garden, just to make sure the pellet doesn't leave your boundary*.

*assuming you don't miss.

They're probably gypos looking to nick dogs or the like so I'm thinking legalities won't be a factor.

The question I'd ask is how do the effective ranges of an air rifle and a garden hose with one finger over the end compare? And which is more likely to take a drone down...

You could get some helium balloons and put up blimps over your garden.

It could also be legitimate; Greater Manchester Police have started using a drone to follow antisocial bikers (yobs on trail bikes normally) to where they live so they can pounce on them. Makes sense, assuming the drones have the range, as keeping up with a CRF or something is nigh on impossible through alleys and across parks unless plod is riding something similar.

It is illegal to damage other peoples property, drones included.

They may be flying over their garden to practice and perfect their skills, I do this quite a lot with my drone.

So long as they are not flying dangerously there isn't a lot that can be done about it, although they should be registered with a flyer id and operator id with the CAA if they wish to remain on the right side of the law.

It's highly unlikely that they are interested in anything going on in your garden or that of your neighbours, if they are a hobbyist or even professional pilot they should abide by the drone code, if your interested check out https://register-drones.caa.co.uk/drone-code

I know everyone is getting all angsty about these but its usually for no reason as someone could just as easily pop a camera over the fence to carry out surveillance on yours or anyone property for nefarious reasons.

Would have thought jamming it would be the more sensible/easy option. You just need to find a way to disrupt the connection to the "pilot".

I do still quite like the barrage balloon concept. Maybe a upturned footy goal full of helium balloons and release them when the drone is overhead. Bonus points for being able to observe the pilot's face as it all unfolds.

It's not illegal at all.

https://publications.parliament.uk/pa/cm201719/cmselect/cmsctech/2021/202108.htm

If they are over 50 metres in the air then they can fly over your garden no problem.

Also trying to bring one down is illegal the same as bringing down any aircraft - because making it fall out of control could cause damage or injury.

Presumably you could request a copy of any video footage they have taken of you.

Just ignore it. Everyone gets too aggravated.

I like the drone jammer suggestion. Fun and effective. Obviously, I couldn't recommend that, as it's quite likely such devices are Gaussian noise generators, and break the law on civilian uses of whole swathes of the EMF spectrum, and they can detect and track down people doing that if they want.

Which asks an interesting question, if you own the land and house you live in - do you also own the space above the house? Is it yours to do what you want and defend as such?
If not, where does it begin/end? If a drone can be 50 metres above my house - does that mean below 50m is mine and I can fly a fire-fighting drone just below and hose it down? Laughing

The air space above us all is regulated by the CAA and all rules and action pertaining to it are governed by them also.

The police have recently been given powers to take action against dangerous or antisocial flying with drones, but as we all know that lot are only just smarter than a brick so will make a complete cock up of every situation and resort to their usual bullying tactics and confiscate everything whilst they go back to the station for donuts and an adult to explain the rules to them and point out that they f'd up again.

You could ask politely to see any footage that you suspect may have been taken of you and yours, however without a court order there is no legal reason for the pilot to show you anything.

Also be aware that the drone carries the SD card with the footage on it and if there isn't anything to read the card with handy then it can't be read!

You can fly closer than 50m to people and housing, it depends on your level of training and qualifications gained.

Like everything else there will be an element of people flying drones with no regard to the rules and regulations, just like people ride and drive without licenses, who will give the hobbyist and professional drone pilots a bad reputation.

The answer to this is 'yes', however just like with land you own, other legislation governs what can be done on/in/under/above it....

Unless you've sold the flying freehold, of course.
