As I wait for me mum to bring me a fresh can of fuel and what other bikes go by, I'm thinking if I really need to disassemble the petcock or running something through a premium tankful will sort the problem?

Hadn't considered testing reserve before I actually needed it, so now I'm stuck on the A27. Only had the zx9r for a couple weeks and I figure the po didn't go on long rides or let it run dry.

I doubt running a tankful of fuel through is going to do anything. You've been running fuel through the whole time you've been riding it. And if you mean running the tankful through with it on reserve, if it's clogged with crap, do you really want to run all crap that through your engine?

20 year old bikes need love. Clean it out if you think it's blocked.

Pull off fuel line, empty fuel into a safe container, remove petcock* and clean... what's to think about?

*And make futile attempt at catching the remaining fuel.

I remember with a smile watching the boss at work try and drain a full tank of petrol from a big lawnmower into a tea cup as he unscrewed the tap to unblock the filter that was clogged up with grass and other shite.
I did point out to him that the teacup might not be quite big enough for the job, but was told to shut up as 'I didn't know what I was taliking about'.
Imagine the glee of the assembled workforce as the 2 gallon tank pissed out all over the wooden Parkies hut and the Boss screaming and shouting.
Mower did run better after we cleaned the filter though.

If the reserve channel in the fuel tap is blocked, it is more likely to be blocked with a sludgy mixture of water and rust. Premium fuel won't do a thing.

Take it off and blow it through gently with an air line in the outlet and the tap set to RES. If it's a vaccum tap you may need to put a line on the vacuum port and suck on that to open it up.

Good time to drain the tank anyway. If the reserve is clogged, you probably have half a pint of rusty water in the bottom of the tank.

No further dismantling or cleaning should be necessary, and you're more likely to break something if you try. You don't need to remove every last molecule of water or dirt.
