So what's all this about?

What is the rubber supposed to do. Do people prefer a rubber one over the plain steel one?

I can't see how the rubber could absorb any shock.

Don't really know the purpose of them, but Fazer 1000s have it as stock and it does seem to be a little less noisy than aftermarket ones without.

Supposedly, it reduces vibration from the chain. I've only seen them in black, not green.

My ER5 had one as stock. Replaced it with a JT plain sprocket and it was a noisy as anything afterwards. I got used to it though. I think the links are supposed to *just* touch the rubbers to prevent it rattling, which sounds to the ear like a gear whine in my experience.

That's an interesting concept, I'll offer it up to the chain and see how close the rubber comes to the links.

Here's another view.

Just recently stuck a generic, without rubber one on a bike. We'll see how much of a difference it makes versus OEM...

Recently replaced my all steel with a JT rubberised - quieter and smoother for sure. Worth the extra few quid

I think this is correct.

Upon offering it up to the chain, it does indeed *just* touch the links. Closer examination shows there are wear marks in the rubber where the links touch. Which would effectively dampen any noises.

The initial reports for the Bonnie are the lack of rubber on the front sprocket has made fuck all difference. Then again this thing has straight-thru exhausts so you'd be hard pressed to notice a 21-gun salute!

Ha ha ha ... yeah, I can't hear bugger all either, with my earplugs in. I've just replaced it with a non rubber plain one, so it's not like I'm gonna notice.
