Work on the Bonnie continues...

Today it was swapping out a warped front disk. Luckily I have a teeny-weeny trolley jack to stick under the frame - ideal for keeping the front end up while the wheel was off.

Just sprockets and chain left to do Smile

Sprockets were an advisory but if you're messing with the brakes why not do this too...

Back sprocket's barely any worse but hey-ho, it's done now.

The Bonnie is all done: warped front disk, non-existent rear pads, new chain & sprockets. Hardest part was probably wrestling the rear wheel back on - kept knocking out the spacers Sad Top tip: for flaring soft-links don't buy the cheapest kit on eBay. I had the foresight to buy the second cheapest, much more substantial Very Happy

All in all a satisfying job done! Probably move back to looking at a Triumph T140's wiring next week.

Pissed about with the exhaust gasket>Link pipe seating/mounting. It wasn't right and objected to anything over 6K RPM's, having a silly resonant buzz.

It's pissing it at the moment, so we'll see when it stops raining.

My headlight bulb blew and my battery failed at roughly the same time last week, so I straight away ordered a new voltage rectifier (a new battery is already fitted), as I've seen this pattern before. Received it through the post today, and fitted it.

Taken the rear swing arm off the GSA to get the drive shaft out that is now in the hands of the British Museum. Buggered beyond belief.
Just ordering parts and crying into what is left of my wallet. BMW know how to get their own back after we bombed their factory. Just glad I can do the job myself and not pay even the most moderate of garages bill, BMW would put the bike into negative equity.

Managed to knock part number 6 down the cam chain slot. Despite having something shoved down there to stop that specific thing happening, it still found a way past. Many, many bad words were said.

Unless anyone has any bright ideas, I'm pulling the motor and splitting the cases.

Rebuilt the clutch slave on the GSXR 11, don't think it will last the seal set from M&P I suspect was wrong as the battle to get the piston back in the bore with the new seal on was difficult, I'd be surprised if it's sitting well.

Enough space for one of those telescopic magnetic pickup things? If you haven't disturbed it too much it maybe an easy pickup.

Metal. It stops the cam slopping about sideways, runs in the groove in the cam.

Forgot they work on phones now... I'll see if I can borrow one. If not, this appears it'll be what I want, it's got a magnet attachment, and the part isn't big or heavy.

I'll have to drop the oil anyway to give the scope a chance, so I'll find out then. It's got a triangular plate that holds a strainer etc around the sump bolt, so I'll pull that whole assembly rather than just the sump drain. Endoscope will eb useful enough to have, especially at about a tenner.

All my parts came to rebuild the swing arm/drive shaft and all have been fitted. I now have a bike with a smoother feel and I know it is all lubed correctly and feels safer too.

Had to stick a bung in my 150 mile old rear PR4, which filled me with joy seeing as I only replaced it 2 weeks ago when the previous one picked up a screw.

How much did the parts cost? I fancy rolling the dice on a used GS, but these kinds of stories suggest my gut vibe is right. What sort of miles were on it before it needed the work doing?

Spent the morning on the 535gt. I've been putting off doing this stuff for a couple of weeks now.

First sort out the induction. The stock airbox/filter setup is restrictive. So I bought an ACE air kit.

Stock setup, little scoop to breathe and a huge filter that fills the volume of the airbox with filter not air.
https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/51394719416_19fc3440ac_c.jpg

The kit adds a trumpet and then mounts the filter on the outside of the box.

https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/51394978453_8ea4b54cef_c.jpg

Next the stock valves are a known weak point. So off with its head!
https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/51395730135_1b62c0c849_c.jpg

https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/51395729820_901b0fd1e4_c.jpg

https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/51394977983_97c1ecc555_c.jpg

and in with these
https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/51395726795_429aeb776c_c.jpg

Finally away with the double skinned heavy and restrictive down pipe and on with a stainless one, AEW Wild Boar end can as well to really, really piss off the neighbours
https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/51395446789_5cb0ed5ca1_c.jpg

Next I need to get a Dyno booked and see what all this crap has achieved.

Took the teenager's Mito tail light apart as the right hand bulb was loose / flickering / not working all the time.

Cleaned all the contacts, checked and double checked and everything worked in the shed (apart from the rear brake switch which has decided to jam up so that now needs replacing)

Then went out with said teenager and the right hand bulb was fine, but then the left one stopped working, shortly followed by most of the other lights including the dash lights, neutral... However, being Italian, shortly afterwards the electrics then decided that everything was now ok and it all started working again.

Looks like I'm going to have to go hunting for a loose connection

Had a look at the petcock on the old KZ1000:

https://i.imgur.com/kGwqWfZ.jpg?1

ON and RESERVE both operate via vacuum switch whereas PRIME is fuel on regardless (a bypass.) The problem: vacuum switch had failed Sad

Turns out the petcock had been refurbed... with the wrong parts! Luckily the old bits were still kicking about in a tin* and I managed to utilise the rubber from the new diaphragm with the centre/plunger part from the old one.

Seems these petcocks are rare as hens' teeth so I assume the correct refurb kit is similarly as rare.

*We'll politely leave out the "who did the refurb?"
