Bikes not mentioned, you may be able to turn it off at least initially.
Sounds like a dangerous abomination to have the car deciding you aren't allowed to quickly overtake that slow caravan halfway through trying.

Cool. The value of my old jalopy just leapt up, sought after by lawless speed freaks. Of course, it’s all nonsense,

A lot of cars with cruise control also have limiters as part of the same system already. They are pretty handy in
the miles and miles of unattended road'works' with 50mph limits enforced by average speed cameras. It's very easy
to creep over 50 when you've been strumming along at 70+ for a number of miles. It's when they are controlled by
GPS and not a button on the dash that you need to worry.

I read the article as more of a "speed assistant" than "speed limiter" but the former wouldn't make for a good headline. In which case it's not a system that would work well on bikes beyond something like a Goldwing.

It's not GPS linked on my mum's Skoda but she bought the top-end fabia with all the bells and whistles and frankly all the "assistance" is very distracting. Brake too hard? Car has a moan. Go too fast? Car has a moan. Fart too loud? Car tells you to turn of the air-con recycle...

<addendum> not mentioned in most articles (or only in passing) data loggers Shocked

Let that sink in.

Okay so you may already volunteer into such a system if you use Google Maps but apparently these black boxes will be mandatory:

BBC News wrote:
Under the new rules, cars will also be fitted with compulsory data recorders, or "black boxes".

So if you have an accident, the police and your insurance company will know whether you've been going too fast. If you've been keeping your foot down and routinely ignoring the car's warnings, they may take a very dim view of your actions.

In fact, it's this "spy on board" which may ultimately have a bigger impact on driver behaviour than any kind of speed limiter. It's easy to get away with reckless driving when there's only a handful of traffic cops around to stop you. Much harder when there's a spy in the cab recording your every move.

So you have a "speed assistant" that you could ignore or turn off but an "always on" black box that'll dob you in at the earliest opportunity. Yes, that makes perfect sense Evil or Very Mad

North America has had speed limiters for years on light trucks, though semis (HGVs) are not limited for some reason.

Limited to 100mph from the factory, my 2012 Ram 1500 which is around 450bhp is limited but its quite straight forward to re-flash the computer to remove the limit with a tool off ebay/amazon. Will probably be the same for limits on cars etc.

No. This an entirely different system where the car's ECU determines the speed limit for a given road using GPS. One minute it's 30mph and then you see a sign for 40... and you wait, and wait for the GPS lag to let you accelerate to 40.

You should be able to disable the speed assistant in the same way as you'd switch off traction control. Or even permanently with a reflash. None of that is really important if you have a black box logging your every move. BBoB - Big Brother On Board.

I worked for a shower in Kazakhstan for a while. The driving standard there is abysmal.
Wreck after wreck.
The client enforced geo-fenced transponders in all works vehicles. Monitoring Acceleration, Braking, Cornering, Seatbelts use, lights use and max speed for certain roads and weather conditions.
Not speed limiter. You could drive how you liked.
But too many violations and your Arse would be history.
Doesn't take much to fit and control (from the sky) so that's probably how it will go.
Even worserererer than a limiter.
And they can work on bikes too the wee bastirts.

Meanwhile Mister Magoo down the road will continue to chug along causing tailbacks, ignoring on-coming traffic with right of way, and pedestrians on crossings. At least when the accident happens it will be at slow speed.

Most arent gps linked but use a camera to recognise speed limit signs ala anpr style

It'll stop him from doing 45mph in every speed limit though.

If its based on a camera, what happens if you tape over the camera after holding a sign up that says 110?

GPS spoofing is a thing as well.

If people want to fuck things up then taping a sign which says 20 over the top of a national speed limit sign would work well. Laughing

Cameras are unworkable as they're affected by things like overgrown trees, missing signs and implied speed limits. GPS maps already work and have done for years. My TomTom had a speed limits and a camera alert system a decade ago.

Easy to update over mobile networks and could possibly even react to temporary speed limits like road works in real time, with the right IT infrastructure.

I don't think location should be tracked at all unless someone expressly opts in without duress (e.g sign here guv). This is your right to keep private where you are going. It has little or no impact on others.

But I am in favour of speed limiters on cars because there isn't a right to trade having a bit of a thrill going fast for someone else's life, or their family member, or friend. The worst thing is that many of these people are massive cowards and will run away from the scene after the accident. I saw one example of this 2 weeks ago. Moron comes down the hill in a residential, thinks hes a real tasty driver, smacks into a car with a family in and then drives off to save his own skin. Cameras are a good idea too if they record only the segments around accidents, hard acceleration and braking, tailgating and that kind of thing. Motorbikes I'm not so bothered about because the risk there is primarily to the rider not those around.

There's a balance to be had, as in all things. If I watch Star Wars (the pre-ruined ones) I just marvel that "a long time ago in a galaxy far away..." that Health & Safety wasn't a thing Shocked No hand rails, no safety cut out switches and don't even get me started on how dangerous light sabres are to the user!

Angle grinders come with guards, there's no law that stops you from taking it off... guns don't kill ppl, ppl kill ppl... you could go on forever with this but it boils down to: we don't trust the lowest common denominator in society with [arbitrary thing] therefore it's hair shirts for all! The collectivisation of responsibility, if you will Thinking

And its always the same types of person.
Type 1: The small percentage of chavvy young men who mod their shopping cart car to sound like a fast car, drive as fast as possible everywhere, don't think about the consequences until its too late.
Type 2: Middle aged man having a mid life crisis. Him getting home matters more than the lives of others. Knows abouit tyhe consequences, couldn't care less.

Limiters work well with Type 2. Type 1 maybe just limit under 25s to speed and acceleration limited electric cars. It should lower the unreasonable insurance on young people too.

There are already penalties to driving/riding like a dick: higher insurance costs, fines, points and a possible prison sentence. Are you proposing that because this net doesn't catch 100% of the miscreants that ordinary, law abiding persons must have restrictions on their liberties?

I'm just arguing on the principle of individual responsibility vs collectivist restrictions.

The problem is that some people don't think about the consequences uintil its too late. In that case the penalty isn't effective. Riders are not a problem, drivers are. Riders kill themselves, drivers kill other people, thats the difference. We know who does the killing so why not just target them?

Aha! So you're saying "screw the cagers, I'm alright" fair enough Smile And you may be correct, bikes will (hopefully) continue to be overlooked much the same as them phasing in zero emissions cars and vans in the 2030's but with the government going as far as saying "we've not thought about bikes, we might get back to you later" no rush! Actually, if one wants to be very optimistic about 2 wheeled life...

Imagine all the cars have speed "assistants" (let's not call them limiters) and black-box dataloggers as mandatory equipment on all new cars. Everyone's driving nice and safe like good little minions. What will happen? Thinking

No more speed camera revenue! A chunk of that revenue goes to maintaining the cameras or keeping the goon in the speed check van topped up with Fanta & Wotsits. No revenue = no cameras.

And the rest as they say writes itself Twisted Evil
