Er 5 starter issues

Any help appreciated. Mine feels like the battery is flat in the morning, click, clunk. But the battery is fine. The loud clunk makes me think starter clutch, alternator rotor? Once it starts it will then start regularly for the rest of the day. It feels mechanical rather than electric. Any ideas on the forum please?

When a starter clutch is failing it sounds terrible.
Clatter clatter crunch, as if something is broken. It's a distinctive sound, and you can search Youtube to find examples. It might sound like this in your case:

When a starter motor is beginning to fail, you get the bike occasionally failing to start but you don't get a horrendous sound. Eventually, it will just stop working.

It's hard to know what the problem might be, from your description of the sound. I'm not sure this is the right way to go about diagnosing a problem.

Start ruling out the easiest stuff first. Test battery, test starter solenoid, check connections, then test starter motor.

Try jump leads to a good battery to find out.

Thanks for the replies. It is definately not the battery. I suspect the solenoid or the clutch. Going to take outer cover off to have a look for anything obvoius

I had similar symptoms with worn out brushes in the starter motor.
