Rather peckish so had a traditional Lancashire lunch;

Wigan kebab w' pea-wet

For the southerners, that is a pie in an oven-bottom muffin (i.e. like a bap), buttered on the bottom, then the pie, then a smothering of mushy peas before the lid is put on it. Tasty and filling. Pie was a local choice too; butter pie (technically potato and butter). Also known as "Catholic pie" as it originated as a pie edible on Fridays when meat was apparently forbidden, so butter was introduced to add flavour in lieu.

Very tasty indeed. Washed down w' a few brews. Top notch.

I always wondered what a Butter Pie was, as mentioned in the song by Paul McCartney 'n' ting.
So now I know Cool Thumbs Up

At first, where it says "buttered on the bottom", I thought it meant "buttered on the underside of the bottom half", which I thought sounded rather nice, albeit somewhat extreme.

I did wonder who might "get hold of" the "pea-wet" first. You'll need to speak to a Wiganer to understand their rationale. Maybe I've got it all wrong and it's not for eating and has a different purpose? Shocked

Mentioned 'faggots' on FB and 12 hours later still not been given 30 days in the hole.

(Someone on Masterchef was making them)

The word in itself isn't offensive though (as it has multiple meanings), it's the context. Maybe I should mention buttered bottoms and pea-wet and see how closely the FB police are watching?

Insurance this year is less than half of the previous year (!). Quite astonished. Given I have breakdown included, take that off and the drop is even more dramatic. Happy days.

They are rather fantastic. Very localised around Chorley / Preston way it seems. 2 for £2.20 too.

I was astonished that all my cars and the bike were a lot less this year. The upside of getting old I suppose. The downside being I'm now getting junk mail from Saga and Readers' Digest Shocked

Absolutely nothing to do with bikes or being on the road.

Today I did dismantle x3 old broken Mitchell 400 reels and make one really good one in perfect working order Smile Thumbs Up .
No pennies were spent.
I now have a good quality reel and plenty of spares to go with it for free. Yay!

My Christmas Cactus is flowering, I picked it up a sick little thing last year from COOP for a couple of quid, I think it likes my rehab.

It actually almost looks like a manufactured decoration, not a blemish anywhere.

When I was a kid in the mid 70s, I had a Mitchell 320, which I've since discovered was reckoned to be a pretty good piece of kit.

I don't know what happened to it, but I have got my first fibreglass rod and I'm tempted to get another 320 and really relive my youth.

I reckon you’re looking through rose tinted nostalgia glasses, and that’s okay.
However things have moved on .
If you’re going to get another reel and go fishing again, get a modern one.
Modern reels make old school reels look and feel like ancient coffee grinders.

That said , Mitchell 300’s/ 400’s/ 410’s are still good reels.

Oh I've got the modern stuff, Drennan carbon rods and all that, I just thought it might be fun to experience what fishing was like 45 years ago.

I'm sure you're right, the reel will be crap and the rod is going to feel like a broomstick (actually it will probably snap if I get anything decent on the end of it) but it could be a laugh.

How's fibre glass with age vs carbon fibre? (given the latter has been out a fair while at this point)
