How's fibre glass with age vs carbon fibre? (given the latter has been out a fair while at this point)

I've snapped several carbon fibre rods in normal use. One of them a pretty expensive fly rod while spey casting and my Dad had a 40lb test curve boat rod let go one section at a time while he had a big stingray on, finally got it into the side of the boat on a stump with one ring left . I've yet to snap or see someone snap a fibreglass one without the aid of a vehicle.

Also electrocution risk.

In answer to the question, depends. Depends on the type of resin used, how they're stored and how succeptible to UV damage it is. If they're stored hung up in their bag in a cupboard, they will last longer than propped against the wall in the shed. Neither the carbon or glass fibres themselves should degrade significantly over time, it's all about what they're held together with.

I suspect fibreglass will probably be better over the longer term because people used to whip on the rings then varnish them which, if you have used a good quality varnish, will block UV damage.

Wow! I’ve had a variety carbon fibre rods for approximately 35+ years.
I’ve never had one break in normal use.
Still have my original Bruce & Walker 13’ match float rod.
The first carbon rod I ever bought in 1982/1983 .?? and it’s still in good condition.
That said, I still have my Diawa fibreglass & Shakespeare fibreglass 12’ float rods and still in good condition.

You must have been catching some VERY big fish to snap a rod Shocked Shocked Very Happy Thumbs Up

I was Spey casting a floating double taper fly line with a tube fly on the end. The whole bottom section of the rod greensticked. Not a fish anywhere near it.

I had a beachcaster let go while casting too. Admittedly that was a cheapo one and I was giving it some welly with a 4oz weight.

I still have my old Winfield fibreglass spinning rod bought in Woolworths nearly 40 years ago. Still my favourite.

More non bike related stuff that’s oiled my gears.

I’m getting good at this repairing fishing stuff.
Today I did complete the repair/renovation of a Mitchell Match reel, using parts from the old broken donor reel.
Again I have surprised myself in a good way.
The reel works really well and as it should Smile Thumbs Up .

Had helicoils fitted to the car's water pump so there shouldn't be any more leaks. Now just need to sort out the traction control module.

Got offered a new job today Cool
I'm "a bit pleased".

Still at the same place, just a much better job.
Much better.

In fact, someone called me (about two weeks ago) and asked me was I going to apply for it.
So I thought "Well, it would be rude not to".
And in fact its a better job than the one I wanted 2 years ago but which I never got.

And no more typing about sputum. Yes! *punches air with fist*
Starting after Christmas, I expect.

Shouldn't interfere with the Italian Prof and his stuff either, which will be nice.

Proper chuffed. Proper!

Barkeep, bring out the Bolivars and Bollinger.
If you're all going to pay my wages, you might as well get something out of it Laughing

I told one of my two paeds/resp consultants that I would be moving on up to work in the Executive Offices* - and I have NO IDEA how she managed to keep a straight face when she said they would miss me Laughing

I've been a proper nightmare for this lot, bless them. But only really because I didn't want this job, I only took it to get back into the hospital, and I was always gunning for the level of job that I've just managed to be offered.

*despite that I haven't had the contract from HR, I'm always a bit nervous about handing in my notice if I've not had the contract for the next job, yet.

Excellent idea.
I'm having one of those too, now.

I went out early this morning to feed some cat-clients for the final time, and it was FREEEEEEEZING - I am very glad indeed to get back indoors, put my slippers on and ramp up the central heating.

Might make some soup later. Saturday bacon and veg soup. With grated cheese, and possibly extra bacon. Om nom nom.

Not today, but just over a month ago ... sorry a bit late posting!!

Company I work for was about to go down the tubes, but somehow we were bought out by a big American company, and as part of being taken over we were promised wage rises (not had any in the last 2.5 years).

I received an 80% wage rise ... first time in my life I've actually been speechless (for a few seconds).

However, I'd already decided I was going to retire by end of March 2022 ... the wage rise will allow me to retire a few months early Smile

All the best ... Barry

All three of my boats were upside down on the grass this morning too. They are however supposed to be on a canoe rack The topmost one was even tied on with a camlock which was still done up, I have no idea how it came off without the rack going over. Is very windy here!

That would be the boats after they came off the water this morning.

The boats live in a fecking huge shed when not being used on account of them belonging to a rowing and canoing club at a place I won't disclose.

That's why I was speechless ... I was hoping for a few extra £k ... I got a double digit £k rise ... in fact the smiley is actually how I must have looked, I had to ask them to repeat what they'd just said!

But I've been planning to retire for the past year, and no amount of money is going to change my mind Thumbs Up

It's almost as if you're surprised and impressed by the fact your noblet is still going.

On that note, there's more stuff you'll need to buy so he doesn't die of hypothermia!
