Its a ZXR750 J1, I bought the bike privately and the accessory on the end of subframe in the picture; with 2 phillips heads and a cable coming from it is not on mine.

What on earth is it for? I'm stumped...

Seat latch.

Locks the seat in place and usually requires a the ignition key to be turned in a lock (usually poking through a fairing) to remove the seat to get at whatever is underneath.

Is the cable bare wire or sheathed in plastic/rubber?

If it is the latter could it be an extra earth lead? Was there an electrical fitting on the back that needed to have this to complete the circuit.

It’s for the lock. You can see the the latch on the subframe side where the cable joins, and the connector on the far end where it would meet the lock.
