It really isn't looking good there for the Afghan forces with the Yanks and everyone else including us pulling out and saying, you'll be all right chaps when they patently won't be.

Maybe that's what the people want, the Taliban, but in my limited knowledge it seems to be at least the same as the Iranian revolution that got rid of the Shah, replacing a more liberal, if corrupt state, with a totalitarian repressive religious culture. Possibly even comparable with IS when it was in power in regions of Syria..

What's people thoughts? Are we well shot of Afghanistan or is it a huge mistake?

My feelings are it could be a place where IS recuperate before exporting their brand of peace and love across the world again but that's just a guess.

How long do you fight their war for them. They have over whelming troop numbers and equipment. They run away. We've bled enough for people won't fight their own fight.

Yes it looks like South Vietnam all over again but like i asked how long to you fight their war for them?

My sense is that the political culture in that region is medieval. He who is most prepared to use savagery will reach the top. Western forces kept a lid on it with aggressive policing but the country was always going to go bad when they left.

It probably doesn’t help that the US forces training the Afghan army have the mantra, “No one is left behind,” which must be a privilege of soldiering reserved for overwhelming force, whereas the religious zealots believe death is the path to enlightenment and 72 virgin shags in the afterlife; this life is therefore cheap to them. They’re kamikaze.

We should have only gone in long enoughto find and kill Osama (and he wasn't even there, he was in pakistan) and the leaders of the Taliban that were exporting violence.

Then fucked off and closed the boarders, including insisting that Pakistan kept it's boarders shut too.

the russians learnt that the hard way,it was obvious from the start that this was what was going to happen to us and our allies as well.

Sadly what is now known as Afghanistan was fucked from the moment we took India and the Russians decided they wanted a piece of the action.

The problem's not just Afghanistan it's Pakistan too. Between them they destabilise the entire region and keep Russia and the other 'stans from serious trade with India.

TBH you could do the world a massive favour and nuke all the way from Urmia to Lahore.

The issue with the area is that most don't have a back bone, they are double headed snakes, that's the culture, run away and join the enemy if they pay more or look like they will win a fight. Like keeping women down and uneducated, something like a live in sex slave. The best idea is let it implode on it's self, no aid, no refugees, anyone complains in this country about this country, ship them out to that hell hole.

It'd be okay if you could isolate them but the Pakistan border is so porous (both politically and due to the geography) one would have to wall off a distance unimaginable even in the wildest of Orange dreams Sad

If we were really interested in being a progressive society then Afghani women would surely qualify automatically for refugee status automatically by dint if being women in a culture which clearly treats women as slaves.

Won't be long before we get the 'Afghan women oppressed by the Taliban' we got last time they were in power. America stopped that last time but you seem to thinks it's all Americas fault. For someone who has left wing tendencies you are very quick to consign Afghanistan women to a living hell just to fan your hate of America.

I happen to believe Afghani women should automatically be given refugee status. For one thing theyre a genuine example of an oppressed group.

Sounds fair enough.

I'd like to hear the argument for accepting refugees in general?

The real problem is Islam, and religions (imaginary friends) in general. For the West's part policy is guided too much by bleeding heart liberals whose view is that they snap their fingers and then everything comes true and there are never any unintended consequences. Therefore a new foreign department should be created in which woke millennial and gen Z types who want to fix the worlds problems can be deployed to do exactly that. No protesting until they have done a deployment e.g sit and cry about global warming in China then after they get out of the torture camp they can come back to the UK.

I think you will find the west is and for a few generations now has been driven by neo-liberalism which is politically right wing ethos.

In this case it is one of the driving forces. I rather suspect it has more to do with a bunch of blokes using 'religion' as their excuse to wield power, collect money, shag kids etc. Hold on, I could be describing the Catholic church 500 years ago there Confused

Remember that it is possible to have a religion and not wield an AK...

Interesting article from March this year says these events were entirely predictable. The US had essentially negotiated its retreat from the Taliban, largely leaving the Afghan government out of it. The withdrawal of Western contractors also means the Afghan military has lost the ability to maintain air support.
