Noisy going into gear

I have a yam diversion 600s 1997
I am getting an awful grinding clunk, going into first gear and then when changing to second.
i thought it was clutch drag, so adjusted the cable to the max and it still does it.

Help!!!

When was the oil chained in the engine?


Is it a shaft drive version or chain?

Answer to that is I don't know when the oil was changed.
It's a chain drive.

You don't know when the engine oil was last changed, then change it now with a new filter.

Examine what comes out, you are looking for "glitter" and any alloy shaving, as well as any other "bits"...

Does this grinding noise only happen when the clutch is used, and in neutral, or all the time ?

Only had the bike for two days, bought it over the phone and got a courier to collect, he had checked it over for me and said it was ok, obviously he didn't ride it.
I have drained the oil and there are no glittery bits, as I had no fresh oil to put in, I put old oil back in and adjusted the clutch cable up, it was slack, and went for test ride, got better as it got warmer.

What condition is the chain in. When did you last adjust it? How do you lube it?

Adjusted and lubed yesterday yamalube. was quite slack.
As I say it has got a lot better, since I took it up the road.

Looking for a set of exhausts for it if you know of any, rotting in the usual place.
Are the divvy 900 exhausts the same?

No not interchangeable. Look at delkevic or Black widow.

Dont put old oil back in, put some fresh oil in if you just got the bike, dont take previous owners statements as gospel.

In fact go the whole hog. Especially if you do not have a fully up to date service manual. Engine oil, oil filter, plugs, air filter, (If that is clean it is both a sign some servicing has been done and it can be replaced). valve clearances, check the clutch plates (Easy on a Divvy) and clean them with a spray-on brake and clutch cleaner.

As in the quote, only believe what you can see or prove!
