I is now a scooty boi so let me get my fukuanorls in first

I sold the old CX and needed something to tinker with.
I was given a 2018 Honda Vision 110 which I repaired and fixed up and then on a whim flipped it for a 2001 Yamaha Majesty 250 and cash my way so I'm in positive funds for a change.

A mate of mine had one when his bad knees made riding a normal bikes difficult and he said it was good fun for tootling about on if you could cope with the scorn and piss taking from 'real bikers'
"Fuk real bikers" sez I "bed wettin pansies if you ask me"
"Owning a CX for years has given me thick skin with that lot"

I could have pushed the boat out a bit and threw money at a 600 Silverwing or similar but cash is limited and I don't need something to commute on or tour, just tinker with and tootle about on.

It started easily and I rode it around the car park before buying it so it seemed like it had sufficient life left in it to justify giving it some TLC.
The feckers here now anyway and I've started the renovation process.
Here it is as I first saw it

On arrival, you could get three chip pans under that seat easily.

Initial inspection showed the front tyre was worn, the rear brake was non functional and the aftermarket exhaust sounded just plain nasty, more on that later.

The main stand looked like it was about to collapse due to rot but after a session with the angle grinders wire brushes I found it was in fact quite sound and mostly surface rust.
So, some kurust, paint and grease got it back into shape and I could rely on it during strip down.
I have dispensed with the AIS devices which give me room to access the stator cover when/if I need to
https://imgur.com/MxToj94.jpg

Removing the plastics wasn't as bad as it might have been.
JIS screwdrivers saved me camming off the tight, corroded feckers so a very good investment that.

As an exhaust stud snapped during the removal process
I decide to whip to motor out and do some rear section corrosion treatment
I dont think I've struggled and snapped so many fittngs on any one bike in a long time, at times what should have been quick simple jobs got to be a Pita and needed ACF50/extracter/welder/helcoils to fix

That head stud fought me all the way but I eventual got it out and sorted/helicoiled
Inset is the typical state of many of the fixings
I can assure you none of the fuckers go back in like that!

The designers probably never expected anyone to do any serious repairs they will be considered disposable to run until something serious breaks machines.

Much the same under the fairings as my old Turd Scooter. Great fun fixing it up but only rode one time to work, that was enough scooter life for me!

I've (briefly) ridden a few50cc scoots a few times they're horrible.

It aint no 600/650 Silverwing or Burgervan nor even the 400 versions but I'm hoping it will be lively enough to make local tootling interesting.
My mate used to flit about the south of ingerlund on his, even on motorways at times and said 65mph cruising was pretty comfortable
with around 80-85 mph flat out
(80-85mph? that's illegal!! who would want to go that fast anyway?)

Manuals wiring diagrams seem non existent for this 2000-2003 model so far.
I've downloaded the 96-2000 one and the later 2003 on 400 one
and have collected common info from both but reckon I will have to build my own.

The rear frame was de-scabbed, kurusted and painted and the engine
descabbed kurusted too in places, then etch primed and painted.
(Red paint cos an extra 5 mph is 5 mph)
The starter was stripped checked cleaned and painted
the drive belt was only 0.2mm down on its initial 23mm so left that be

Nice work so far but it needs some metalflake paint and a repro of 'Bat out of hell' cover on the side panel(s) . Then you need to dig out your tassled Lewis, white fisherman's socks, silk scarf etc for a trip up the Ace
or better still that fuck-wit emporium - Bike Shed.

The carb was minging.
https://imgur.com/li25SHp.jpg

I'm surprised it started and ran so easily when I went to see it and rode it around the car park.
One float bowl screw sheared off when I tried to remove it
but I managed to tack a nut on and draw the remnant out.
The diaphragm was stiff as old boots, I pushed the piston up
and it stayed there.
It was only when I got a new one did i realise how stiff it had become compared to a soft pliable new one.
the accelerator pump was seized/clogged and non functional
the secondary jet was clogged up and
lotsa gunk inside the float bowl too.
It looked so bad initially I panic ordered a cheap Chinese copy for £60
( Fowlers want over a grand for a new one, yeah right)
When I realised I was actually making good progress renovating it I initially thought I'd wasted sixty quid, but then realised I'll be getting more than £60 worth of spare carb parts so that didnt feel too bad.

I see it has a Drosselklappen sensor or TPS if you like
The earlier models didn't have this and the later EFI 400s didn't need.
On further rumination as it's got a single fixed position pulser,
it's probably an electrical version of the old vacuum advance you'd find on old cars.
Haven't found the ignition unit yet but reckon the tps sends a variable voltage to it and it responds by advancing the spark in relation to tps voltage as the throttle opens.

I'll stick the scope on it when it's up and running to see how it behaves
If the wiper is worn/erratic I'll look into devising an alternative to it cos I aint paying £200 for a 6.4K variable resistor

Anyhoo, its been cleaned inside and out new screws where needed and etch primed and sprayed then refitted and up and running and all working for now.

The decrustification is almost done and it's running pretty sweet too.
I made a point of undoing lots of bolts ands screws then cleaning them and copperslipping them before doing them back up
so if I need to access anything later on I shouldn't have the arseache I've had so far.

Whilst replacing the crusted in RR screws with SS cap heads
I recalled some folk saying the YP RR could be flakey so did some tests.

Running the motor for 15 minutes got the RR to over 80C
way too hot to touch, so I had a cunning plan
Microcontroller, temp sensor, switching circuit and fan!
Then I thought FFS, K.I.S.S. and had another, cunninger, plan.

Removal of that AIS filter bollox gave me room to fit a heatsink made from 6mm ally plate
so cut one, drilled it and stuffed a tube of thermal paste
in the recess at the back where the potting sits about a mm or two below the rear face, clean and paste the two mating faces and fitted it.
20 minutes running only got it to 60C so I'll take that as an improvement and see about further mods/upgrades before the plastics go back on.

Looking at the leaky, too noisy exhaust I found it already had
a 'db killer' of sorts in there.
A stubby wee thing it was, I'm guessing someone had cut it short then hammered it flattish.(top right of pic)
It just sounded nasty to me and a bit too loud for my taste
I trimmed off the hammered part and found I had some tube that was an interference fit so tapped that well in and hammered the end flat, folded it and hammered the end flat again.
It aint going nowhere and reaches to the yellow dot compared to the red dot where stub reached.

Now, how many holes?
It has to breath yet have a wee bit of back pressure
so as the down pipe was 30mm in diameter I reckoned I had to have least the equivalent area to let zorst escape so drilled some holes and then a few more for luck.

This and leak fixes have got it sounding OK now
the MOT guy shouldn't have an issue with it

Slight mod to the RR.

Sitting down and having one o me thinks last night.
I recalled digging a few failed Rrs out and the potting while it obviously will get hot, isn't the main path of heat dissipation.
It might have a good thermal conductivity rating but its usually a compromise between that, price and component protection * ( see below )
Packing it out with paste won't hurt but will have a limited affect

The SCRs (which dump the excess power) I saw were usually screwed to the finned casting using a mica insulator and this is obviously the main heat dissipation path.

Rough spot tests confirmed the fins led the ally plate during temp rises which got significantly hotter where it contacted the casting than the central potting area.

So, having a new tube of thermal paste to hand, I whipped it orf, cleaned and polished it all up and gave it plenty, especially on the finned casting to plate areas
Time will tell I spose, hopefully It will keep the temps in a region the components can cope with.

*
From the interweb:
"On average, standard filled epoxy adhesives achieve thermal conductivity measurements of between 0.4 and 0.55 W/m.K , whereas an unfilled epoxy adhesive would achieve less (which is a pity as many potting applications require a low viscosity adhesive to fill all the gaps around the components). However, specially developed thermally conductive epoxies are available with thermal conductivity of between 1.5 and 3 W/m.K"

Aluminium in comparison has a tc of 200+

This it after removal and prior to polish and re-application of paste

Today it got MOT'd and taxed
Here it is wating alongside stinky smelly biker bikes at Bike care bristol.
https://imgur.com/y7R2mhg.jpg
and in for test.
It passed with one very minor snag.
I had overlooked a missing locking nut under the RH brake lever pivot bolt.
but they stuck one on for me and orf I went
https://imgur.com/GMpnR9U.jpg

It run runs pretty damn good really
Take off/Acceleration wont be lifting the wheel off the deck but good enough
Not used to riding it yet, I kept looking for the clutch, brake pedal and gear change when stopping at junctions and had stop myself blipping the throttle.
Normally on a bike, you move off and it's 'undercarriage up'
onto the pegs, on a scoot its up and forward.
I Didnt quite know where to put my feet at first, it felt bit wierd tbh
I have to overcome habit and muscle memory I spose.

By the time I got home I was getting used to it and
it was quite good fun really. It would get up to around 40-50
in a respectable if unspectacular manner
It's low Cog makes very biddable and flexible for filtering too.
The deflector I added to the screen makes visor up riding
comfortable.
Now its taxed I'll take it for a longer out of town ride soon and see what it will cruise at.
I doubt it will see much over 80 flat out but if it will cruise at say 60-65 without feeling too busy, I'll be OK with that.

I get that, but the seat is pretty big and scooped so you feel more
connected than just perched on a fanny pad clinging to the bars.
I found with feet forward you push back a wee bit and it kind of locks you in.
It aint perfect of course
I rarely if ever, take passengers so I've been mulling over methods to mount the top box over the passenger seat
with attached pads to act as a back rest to enhance the comfort and 'locked in' feel of it.
The grab rail is steel not cast alloy so should provide a strong base for a rack.
