I've been out putting on some miles on my 2009 ER6-F, I did roughly 400 miles over last weekend. From a full tank I only seem to be getting 100 - 120 miles so around 28 - 32 mpg. I've not even been hooning it as the weather is shite and I am a shitebag.

Online generally states it should be doing around the 50mpg range.

The only modifications that I know of is the black widow exhaust, it currently has standard sprockets.

Driving around town it really doesn't like being in 2nd gear while under 20mph and equally it really doesn't like being in 6th gear while under 40mph as it becomes a little herky-jerky on the throttle then.

Does it need a re-map to sort this out? I guess it's running really rich as even with the baffles in it pops and crackles a lot. Would using different sprockets (down one in front, up two in rear) mean I can drive in higher gears at lower speeds?

I wouldn't mess with sprocket teeth ratios just yet...

As to running lean, possibly. A decat exhaust will be more free flowing but probably won't have much impact if the air intake isn't modified to match. If anything, given your reported mpg, it might be running a bit rich! TBH might be worth looking for a fuel leak.

I AM A RETARD I MEANT TO SAY RICH Sad

EDIT: on a possible fuel leak, how can I detect it as the bike doesn't leave any residue or staining on the driveway?

You got this from a garage didn't you?

I'd do another tank and take a proper measurement, and then get it back to them to check over. There's no way an ER6 with a noob on it should be in the late twenties early thirties.

So. 6th on my exup at 30 was okay, exup valve. 2k revs.

On the strumpet (3 cylinder as opposed 4 cylinder and exup valve) anything lower than 40 3rd gear. The engine can do it but it's really lumpy.

Strumpet has a bigger engine.

50mpg will be on a mixed cycle. My FZ was doing close to 80 mpg on the motorway despite a 35 mpg quoted figure.

Been out for a thrap on mine today, I think you have “residual car brain”. Basically you are under-revving it. Having come from a 6cyl diseasel I struggled to rev the bike too.

I’m doing 3rd for 30, 4th for 40-50, but hanging on to it up to 70 on A roads if I’m on and off the throttle. I’m generally only going to 5th or 6th if I have a long straight or sweeping section. I know what you are going to say too, if you get a higher gear you are less jerky on and off the throttle, yep, but you will get used to it.

As arry said, run another tank through and drop it back if things are not picking up, but give it some beans. (Not riding like a loon, just hold those gears)

Thumbs Up

Thats not right, i got that mpg thrashing the hell out of a gsxr 1000 no way should an er6 ridden sensibly do that.

You calculating that from amount of fuel put in against miles on odo (right way)? Or you just taking the miles done when fuel light comes on against the capacity of the tank (wrong way)? Also you are using Imperial gallons not American ones?

If that is the true figure there's something wrong, as you just bought it from a dealer I'd make it their problem.

I can easily get north of 50mpg on the XSR and they're not wildly dissimilar bikes.

As to revving it my other vehicle is a Skoda Shite-Triple (3-cyl diesel) and I have to rev the fuck out of it to do anything so no problems transitioning to a bike Very Happy

I went out at the weekend on Sunday and done this route:

Departing Hamilton by M74 (S),
M74 (S) continuing to M8 (W) merge at J22,
M8 (W) continuing to J30 then joining A82 (W) via Erskine Bridge,
Due to road closure of A82, had to leave A82 by A812 exit,
A812 to B857 to A811 re-joining A82 (N),
Continuing A82 through Tarbet heading North towards Crianlarich,
Taking exit from A82 onto A85 (E) at Crianlarich,
Continuing on from A85 onto A84 at Lochearnhead,
Continued A84 through Callander and Doune until J10 of the M9,
Joined M9 (S) until merge with M80,
Continued M80 (S) until J4 taking M73 (S),
Continued M73 (S) until J1 taking M74 (S) until reaching Hamilton again.

My trip read as 157.3 miles and when I filled up to the top of the tank at the Jet garage on Bothwell Road again it took 12.09 litres to top off the tank: yielded 59.2 mpg.

So I guess I am an idiot and I think what I did to fuck up was I was running the tank down to the empty line but the empty line isn't empty and there's an uncertainty of measurement in the sensor or dial itself. I should have logged it properly.

On that route I tried hard to keep it at the speed limit and I only hooned it twice: once when some cunt in an Audi kept getting up my arse so I blasted to get away from him and the other time was when some guy in a Chubb van tried to cut me off from filtering infront of him at lights by moving his van into an angle closing the gap, it was at lights and he was in front so as soon as we moved off, the car in the right lane dropped back a bit and then I went into the left lane and just blasted past.

High gear/low revs (to the point where the engine is labouring or chugging) is lot worse for the engine than low gear/high revs. Let it spin.

Fuelly.com

It's kinda sad, but I can't help but fill it in every single time.. Looking back at the total cost of fuel filled up per vehicle is the most saddening.... Sad

To be fair I went out to St. Andrews this weekend with her and had a bit of a blast on the back roads out there. Definitely didn't see close to 62.1 mpg this weekend Laughing

I bought new sprockets and a chain for the bike, is it worth changing the chain adjusters at the same time? I found them brand new online and it's only £35 for a pair delivered.

Fair enough, will just leave them as it is. Was just thinking of preventative maintenance on things that are coming off it anyway.

I was considering trying to change the sprockets and chain myself but decided the chance of me fucking it up is too damn high so booked it in to the Glasgow Kwak dealership next week.
