In choosing a "forever" holiday bike to take and keep abroad to ride through winding countryside roads, I'd like to hear some comparisons between the likes of the ZRX1200/CB1300 and their 750 counterparts.

Specwise:

ZXR1200...CB1300...CB750
122hp.......114hp......75hp
112Nm......117Nm....64Nm
227kg........234kg.....215kg (dry)

For a penalty of ~15-20 kilos, some extra tax and more expensive rear tire, there's almost double the power. They do look huge, is the extra weight even noticeable?

I do feel a wee lack of power on the 750 after the zx9r but I think that keeps trouble at bay Surprised with the cbr forks it doesn't handle bad either for what it is considering the replacements aren't any more agile.

What is it the yanks say? There is no substitute for cubic inches.

I prefer a big engine with oodles of power to spare. Others prefer to wring the neck of little engines. They are, of course, wrong. Big is beautiful (in bikes, not women before someone suggests I try riding Diane) Cool

No replacement for displacement - more a disparagement of turbos than anything else.

Why not go for something a little more modern than the bikes you have suggested for yourself? Then you can cut on the weight, have better handling, AND have all that lovely litre bike power. CB1000R, GSX1000F, ZX1000S, FZ1 Fazer, MT10, or MT09 for some triple fun. Even my much older FZS1000 beats the ZRX and CB1300 in most respects.

In fact, that's your answer: get an FZS1000 Fazer, upgrade the suspension, and know there's nowhere you can go to improve on your choice Mr. Green Laughing

Out of the bikes mentioned I’d go for the Kawasaki, looks like the bike it’s plagiarising, good build quality and decent engine.
I’d also consider the GSX1400. The Honda is nice but will be dull as ditchwater. I’m guessing you aren’t chasing optimum performance or handling if you are looking at these types of bikes but a nice cruiser that ticks the image / looks boxes. The modern naked bikes while having great dynamics look shite and have engines derived from sports bike power units, while they are very powerful they don’t have that old school low end punch and have to be revved to get the best from them.

Ouzzer got that bit right, although chickenstrips suggestions are great. What makes my eyes water is a big naked with a round headlight, all day comfort for 1 or 2, maybe 3 if her friend is willing, decent power and handling.

If money was no object I'd get a z900rs, although it looks a bit "small".

I figure all of them blow their ~700cc counterparts out of the road completely? As in, after trying any of those would I want to keep mine?

To the north of Portugual where mountains, all kinds of twisty roads and cheap food is aways round the corner.

Currently ride a Bandit 1200 and an SV650.

The SV is about 25hp less power and a fat Labrador lighter than the Bandit.

Having toured on both through winding roads. For me, if I could only have one it would be the Bandit 1200 no contest.

Or the BMW R 1,800.
Big engine, big tyres, big everything Thumbs Up

Brought to you by the same people who think that 180HP from a 4 litre V8 is a good thing.

Not really looking for bike suggestions, more for the experience of riding/owning both e.g. if the extra power of the bigger muscle bikes is worth the weight and size penalty considering the 750cc counterparts aren't that "slow".

I got my 750 mainly for the reason that it’s more sensible to commute on a bike that size than a litre sport bike, but it’s still fast enough to be a lot of fun. I do miss the extra power of the litre class bikes but on normal roads it’s definitely more useable. That said, my next bike will likely be another gixxer thou cos I just love em.

I had a Bandit 1250 for years, then I bought an MT07.

For a while I enjoyed the smaller, lighter bike and the ability to thrash the tits of the engine without instantly ending up doing illegal speeds.

But after a while I missed the torque and refinement of the bigger engine and I bought another Bandit 1250.

I'm not looking to change my bike anytime soon, but if I was I wouldn't consider anything under 1000cc.
