Depends what you're funding, if you have a realistic proposition of making said thing at the end, and what rewards you give out. I can't advise without that information...

To give you two ends of the spectrum:

A member on here tried to crowdfund his racing career. He got nothing, zip, nada, zero.

David Braben crowdfunded the development of Elite Dangerous. I signed up, and got a cheap (ish) copy of the game when it came out. It's now one of the largest MMOs on the web and is consistently updated.

Your mileage may vary, as the yanks say.

He somehow got £40 in his attempts to become BSB Josh.

Crowdfunding for his career as a musician was less successful.

That wasn't the person I was thinking of specifically. Josh got donations because people wanted to laugh at his enormous potential for failure.

Get a job or get a second job and save money instead of trying to sponge off the gullible .

Depends on what it's for really.

I recently saw a Go fund me post so someone could get his first big bike and well wtf. I'm working whatever extra hours I can to cover the cost for my bike lessons and tests and then towards my first big bike.

I know what you meant but that's not actually how we say that phrase.

Very Happy
