My grand daughter has a cheap and cheerful notebook sized laptop for school work. Which make I'm not sure until I see it. As per most of these bits of kit it doesn't have much storage, either 64 or 128 GB which as the operating system takes a good chunk, she has pretty well filled. It also doesn't have a memory card slot according to her.

Do all computers take a standard size solid state hard drive like the old mechanical ones did or are these small cheapy ones supplied with it soldered on the motherboard.

I have a spare 250 GB solid drive which I could fit (if it fits) but before I take my hammer and chisel out and break into it I want to know if it's even worth trying or shall I just bite the bullet and buy her a better one?

Depends if it’s upgradable, might be soldered onto the main board.

If it’s an old 2.5 inch hard drive they vary by height, if it’s a new m2 type thing I think there are a few styles and length.

I would probably get something like this or similar. 128GB for a tenner might be worth a punt - shame it's not USB 3.0 though

Another vote for the external USB drive but I would go with something more like this in the "fit plus" variant. It will protrude less and is a faster and more reliable drive.

That is the second gen version, it's not very good. The first gen first version was quite good though. Also the Samsung model is a lot faster.
