Hi, I'm new to motorcycling. I want to ask everyone for advice based on their experience. I recently took my motorcycle to a garage PMG Motorcycles in Sutton, London. On my first visit I requested:
1) The replacement for the front wheel bearing and steering bearing (I bought and paid for all parts myself)
2) Replacement of coolant reservoir (I bought the reservoir myself)
3) Fixing the main beam of the headlight. It no longer worked.
4) MOT
When I went to take my motorcycle my MOT had not been done. I never understood exactly why. But, I did not insist. I was charged £440 for all work. £360 for the replacement of the bearing 1). And £80 for number 2) and 3).
Can anyone tell me based on your experience if these prices are fair or was it expensive?
Thanks

Maybe tell us what the motorcycle was? Some might be more time-consuming than others ...

From their website it looks like they charge 50-60 per hour, probably plus VAT, so depending on how much of a bitch your bike was to work on, that might be about right.

Did you ask for an estimate first?

Bearlngs. The Fronts aren't that difficult to do but the steering bearing requires stripping of the whole front end.

Indeed - I ain't not time-served mechanic but If I could do both those jobs in 6 hrs even on a basic bike I'd be fairly pleased. .
.. I do spend a lot of time thinking and drinking tea though.

Five or six hours to replace head bearings and front wheel bearings? Shocked That's taking the piss!!

I suspect the main reason they didn't do the MOT is because they're not an MOT test station.

No but quite often if you ask for such they run it over to their mate down the road who does do MoTs.

I am a pro so got an Idea
Without knowing what bike it is impossible to really judge

Difficult bike in poor condition and needing wheel bearing and headraces at the same time indicates poor condition ! ABOUT RIGHT

Easy bike great parts and all goes smoothly bit high!

So tell us what bike !

I asked Traxden Montorcycles in North London for an estimate to see what they would say.
I asked how much would it cost to change front wheel bearing and steering bearings (all parts provided by me). The answer was 2 and half hours. That is £50 plus VAT = £150. And they said, that this is an estimate, but in any case it will not be more than £200. So, I was overcharged by PMG Motorcycles. I suspected it.

Correct. They are not an MOT station. But, the MOT cost was agreed the first time I went there to have all everything done. So, I had to go back a second time for the MOT for which I paid. And it gets worse, the headlight stopped working all together. So, when I went the second time, I asked:
1) MOT
2) Fix the headlight
3) Adjust the idle which is just turning right or left a single screw to increase or decrease the idle.
I was charged £95.

Seems like it..

.. most folk here do their own spannering for this reason. If you can find a trustworthy place then use them - same as any trade I s'pose..

This^

I am looking forward to wrenching on my own bike when I get all the parts in and it's literally cost me less than 30% of what the garage quoted.

The only thing I am not confident on is doing the chain and sprockets, just because I don't want to fuck up riveting the chain given how critical it is.
