there has been a double fatality this morning, about a 2 minute drive from my home.
a van pulled out and took out 2 motorcyclists, a 49yr old local fella, and a 38yr old from Gosport.

a bit of a harsh reminder just how vulnerable we are when it happens on your own doorstep.

This time of year isn't great for spotting motorcycles, when peak traffic is either when it's dark/nearly dark or the sun is low in the sky and in your face.

LMFAO and only £22.99, a lot cheaper than the £99.99 vapourware version.

Lack of truck tape means I won't be trusting that to stay on in 100+ MPH against a headwind.

I remember a few years ago, a kid on a 125 got wiped out when he lost control and slammed into an oncoming van on one of my favourite detour roads (it's nothing special - just nice, local, green, superb bends, a hill and 3 or 4 overtaking spots). It was reported locally, and they put up flowers and all that stuff. That really bummed me out. Didn't know him, and had never heard of him before, so it was completely irrational of me. I think it was because I always associated that road with good feelings. You don't want cold hard reality to intrude into your happy place. You do tend to get a lot of these reports at this time of the year, though. There will be more as the weather worsens.

People die all the time, I watched a friend get torn into pieces after a van and car were playing cat and mouse and brake checking each other and van overtook, went into my friend head on at 40+.

He died instantly, perhaps I am not affected like most, I was truly gutted and upset but sometimes life rolls the dice and you don't roll the win. Can't live in fear though, you'll never do anything.

Back to the time of year, yeah it's horrible. I cycle to work and have the same issues of not being seen - defensive riding is turned up to 11 to compensate. Mornings are pitch black for me now as I'm out at 6am, but getting home is starting to hit twilight. Urgh. Bring on the spring.

I'm already enjoying the darker mornings - so far - it's the first time I've got a bike with an additional 2 sets of front LED lights. One set is wired to the full beam (I couldn't have them on all the time they're just so bright!).
But already they make a huge difference to my previous bikes, cars are moving out of the fast lane on motorways much more quickly and I'm being noticed filtering and getting more space than I've had before, I do a lot more head nodding to say thanks too.

If only I had these on my Divy 900 years ago when an escaped horse took me out at night on an unlit country road - I would have seen it soon enough to stop in time.

I think the whole “there but for the grace of God go I” feeling can have an especially powerful effect.

People die all over the world every day in all kinds of horrible ways and it means nothing to me. I mean I have as much empathy as the next arsehole, but meh… However when someone dies doing something you do, where you do it… …that hits home.

Despite knowing how high his chances of eating ground were, my mate did Proximity Wingsuiting for a good few years. He stopped when someone that was very, very smart (a lecturer or professor I think he said) miscalculated and it ended exactly how you think it did. He laid off it for a while, had a last blast, and hung it all up (literally, it's in his garage rafters now).

I'm gutted for all concerned.

There's every chance that I could die, in fact I guarantee it. Might as well be on a motorbike. Better to burn out than fade away. (From Highlander).

We are appealing for witnesses and information following a fatal road traffic collision in the Marchwood area.

Officers were called just after 6.15am this morning (6 October), following reports of a three vehicle collision on the Marchwood Bypass in Totton.

A blue Mercedes Sprinter van was invo0lved in a collision with a black Honda motorcycle and a white Yamaha motorcycle on the A326 Bypass.

The drivers of both the motorcycles, a 38-year-old man from Gosport and a 49-year-old man from Southampton, sadly died at the scene.

Their next of kin have been informed and are being supported by specialist officers at this time.

A road closure has been put in place on the A326 Marchwood Bypass in both directions while officers begin to investigate the exact circumstances of the incident.

We are keen to hear from anyone who may have been in the area at the time and saw what happened, or saw the three vehicles driving in the area prior to the collision.

In addition, if you have dash cam footage of the vehicles and/or the collision, please call us.

Any information you have, no matter how insignificant you feel it might be, could help aid our investigation.

Anyone with information is asked to call 101, quoting reference number 44210400737.
