The chain ring being small will limit how fast you can go.

1x gearing is great for convenience however when you've got a 46 or 51 tooth gear on the rear cassette, front chain rings could do with being a bit bigger.

On bikes with three front chainrings they would usually be 22/32/42 or 24/34/44 or 26/36/46 so a single 30 tooth chain ring will restrict how fast you can go.

I replaced the 30 tooth chain ring on mine and now have a 36 tooth one which still isn't as big as I'd like the chain ring to be.

though to be fair, the lowest gears are very silly, legs spinning not moving at all should be good for hill climbing though

It's not that low really. My bike has a slightly smaller first gear than that and I was using it a fair bit to spin up the climbs at Glentress last week.

I binned that stupid plastic spoke guard thing, was rattling around and annoying me on my first proper trail ride then came lcompletely loose., so cut it off.

I've never understood the need for a spoke guard.

Sure, if the derailleur is set incorrectly, then you could possibly shift up past the biggest sprocket, but otherwise it's impossible for the chain to just slip off the biggest sprocket into the spokes.
