Interesting... a summary of the first interview:

Paul: agency drivers in short supply more than drivers in general. Only largest money pots (supermarkets, Royal Mail) can afford them as IR35 has increased the costs vs. previously self-employed. Anyone who can afford 30 agency drivers gets 50 so they have plenty spare, literally sitting around doing nothing.

Moan up about the costs of training in UK + exploitation of immigrant drivers (who are cheaper as less training required.) Then onto the lack of services for lorry drivers at motorway services and the general wellbeing of of the industry. An industry with no romantic image, attacked from all sides. No one would choose it as a job now.

2nd interview is mostly the same, all pretty depressing.

Something dramatic will have to change or there'll be no lorry drivers at all in 10 years.

Worth mentioning that they also detail how the industry lacks new blood, but younger drivers can't be insured, and even finding younger drivers is a struggle. Training costs £6k anyone?

The drivers are treated as 'professionals' by VOSA and their employers with regard to risk and training but without the pay or facilities that go along with the responsibilities.

And yes, foreign drivers kept the wages low for 15 years and hid the UK driver shortage problem quite nicely thankyou. Haulage bosses renting houses for groups of EU drivers to live in and sending a big FU to the UK wage base wasn't a long term solution. Who knew? Rolling Eyes
