I came to my 2009 Derbi Terra after a visit to town, it started fine then when I moved the handlebars it died. Completely dead, nothing on the dash. I straightened the bars, the lights came back on, started then had exactly the same issue. Dead bike. After one more try the bike no longer comes on at all. It sounds to me like an electric fault - bad earth maybe but my problem is I just don’t know where to start trying to track down the problem. Any advice gratefully received!

Like bending a bit of metal backwards and forwards until it breaks, pretty much the same can happen with electrical wires.
The steering head area is a common place for breaks in wires as in moving the bars, the wires bend back and to.
The fattest wires being stiffer bend less well and are most likely to break. It sounds to me like the main wire to the ignition and lights has let go.
You will need a meter ( or a bulb and a couple of wires) and a wiring diagram would be a big help. Find where isn't getting an electrical supply and then you will have identified where the fault lies.

As a start I'd try the biggest wire going to the ignition switch .... it may well be red.
Having said all that , yeah it could be an earth lead, but the same principle applies

I took your advice, followed the wires back from the ignition, found a wire that had broken off a connecting block. I’ve had to remove the original block and replace it with a screwed terminal block but the bike is now working! Thanks!

All of these era bikes based on that Aprilia/Piaggio motor are useless in the leccy dept. I pulled my hair out with a Mulhacen before rewiring the thing from the ground up, then flogging the bastard thing. Went well when it wasn't fucking around though.

Those blocks aren't amazing for motorcycles (heat and vibration will work the screws loose). It'd be a good idea to replace it with a proper connector block.

Good to know you found the cause though - good luck with the test.
