I've bought a new battery for my XSR and I already knew my trickle charger wouldn't be up to the job of lithium ion (it does "STD" "AGM" "6V" and cold modes) so I thought I'd get an AGM...

So what the charger doing differently between STD (lead-acid wet I assume) and AGM? Apparently it's 13.8 to 14.4 volts for the former and 14.6 to 14.8 for the latter. No problem, I get that there are different battery chemistries.

Anyhoo, what's the bike actually do? Given the Haynes manual continually refers to "sealed lead acid batteries" I can only assume it'll chuck out the lesser voltage... just checked and I'm getting 14.3V at idle.

Are there any bikes that expect an AGM and therefore charge at the higher voltage? Any replacement reg/rec units? Or just need to top-up the battery manually from time to time regardless of use?

I doubt Yamaha expect anyone to fit a 'wet' battery these days. You're overthinking it. Fit and forget I reckon, although I always tend to disconnect earth if leaving a while.
I dislike trickle chargers.

Was it a precautionary new battery, mine is 2016 seems Ok I do trickle charge it on and off through winter because immobiliser has a slight draw.
But I am a bit worried as #2 bike is 2013 off roader and was also Ok -until it packed up completely a few weeks ago, and bike could not run at all let alone start - unless on jumpers.
If something similar happened to XSR it is more likely to be further than a mile from home I suspect.

To a certain extent. I had no problems over the year till this last month I was either jump starting it or trickle charging it every week. I could have squeezed more use out of the old one but it's sorta rolled in with the big service I've just done. That and I don't have any spare batteries and they can be very handy for testing things.

With regards to AGM batteries I'm just questioning how they can be superior if a typical vehicle can only charge them to 80% of the capacity Thinking

Alternator regulators won't be bothered if AGM or 'lead Acid.
It's more how you use and abuse the battery.
There might be more sophisticated charge control on more sophisticated machines.
I generally go for the same Amp-hour rating and The other values that the OEM recommends.

I've not bothered phaphing with lithium.

They spontaneously combust if overcharged and their protection fails.

Conventional lead acid would probably boil dry and short out.

I keep my chargers suspended off stuff and no combustible in the drop zone for if they ever decided to let go.

14.3V will charge your AGM battery just fine.
It could be charged faster but as a stator+shunt type regrec system is a compromise between getting enough power and not overcooking the battery, 14.3 is a ball park voltage.

After charging Do a SoC voltage test after say 12 hours left alone at room temp and if the battery is 12.7v+ its all tickety boo.
11.7V issa fuct innit

Bar end mirrors usually have a negative side effect of pulling the battery voltage down.

People dont listen though....................
