What is the best way to build up my confidence when cornering to the left or right? I always think if i lean too much i might fall off, especially around round abouts.

Try hanging off a bit,but not like a monkey, just by leaning into the bend.

its a cbr 600. I tried staying in 3rd gear when going around round abouts, where as turning left or right i'll drop down to 2nd,and its really, really slow.

Will try out your tips, cheers.

Following good riders and watch the way they take corners, follow their line into them etc is a good way of learning to corner. Plus taking the same stretch of road over and over again, is helpful. I also found that getting decent tyres was a huge confidence booster - my Dunlop 207's are a prime example, thus helping one feel confident when cornering.

Try these out Thumbs Up

I would suggest 3rd gear is to high for roundabouts, mind that depends if there mega ones or not. Laughing

Start off on a relatively small roundabout, you will be nearly at knee down level at 40mph, start about 25 and work your way up gradually, have a bit of faith in the bike, put it in a less responsive gear and that should help your confidence.

i use opposite leg to straddle and hug the tank with
left leg on right handers etc.

and be careful if you decide to follow decent riders, they will be quicker than you in corners so if you try to stay with them you might come a cropper so beware and ride safe Very Happy

Time.

And not trying to run before you can walk. Did he even ask about knee down? I didn't notice. Simple leaning confidence is required before you start any of that stuff.

Good tyres, a dry road and go at your own pace. You'll scrape your peg on the ground before you're anywhere near falling off, you just need to convince yourself of that.

I too suffer lack of confidence on bends although it's a bit stranger than that

lefties I can quite happily scrape the pegs as Bendy put it

but righters I just get the jitters and they don't feel right.

practise and convincing myself I guess is the trick

Thats unusual as it's normally left handers that people have the most problem with.

I read a stat. someplace a while back that 80% of bike deaths at corners were on left handers.

I still have a healthy fear of corners that I feel no real need to overcome. However if you do find yourself in a situation where your approach is too fast and no time to break, I guess knowing you could do it as opposed to the fear freeze is best.

I think its just going to come with time like the others said.

Just remember, the faster you go the less margin for error, also the more likely an innocent patch or water or leaves or gravel is to fetch you off.

I also have a bit of a problem with corners because I came off my bike on a slow speed corner, so now I'm wary of them all. However I'm trying to get my brain to realise that it was wet and a bit muddy when I came off, not normal road surface!

Time is right, the more you practice the more you'll get comfortable. I'm slowly improving and I'll just keep working away at it. Best to practice on the same stretch of road so you can gauge your speed, and practice when the road isn't busy so if you're going a bit slow you don't feel you're bothering other traffic..

Are you serious about the peg thing? Wow... I can't wait until tomorrow, I'm going to try it.

I didn't say it was a good thing - it's not. If you're getting your peg down, your body positioning is wrong, cos you should hit your knee on the deck first as a certain someone keeps telling me.

I was just pointing out that you'll hit something else on the ground before you run out of tyre and thus cornering ability - you know that if you're not scraping any bits of your bike along the floor then there's potential for more lean. The key is mastering it so that you can use the lean without the scraping, cos obviously dragging a piece of metal along the floor has potential to go a bit wrong if it decides to embed itself in the road.

yeah i had the same problem, i don't ride a sports bike of sort its a gz marauder, i came off once on a right hand bend on a 50cc after that i was never confident on right hands.

i had stiches in my knee and they told me to keep it straight as the wound would open up again, so i couldn't ride a bike they said....

did steve listen?? nap, soon as i got home, started piecing the bike back together and was out on it the next day, and i must of been back and forth to the hospital about 5 times, and the 5th time i even went on the bike Razz

but it just shows you, the more you ride, the more confident you get.

Now im fine, just replaced the rubbers on my pegs a few days ago as i worn them down Razz

ride , and ride some more.

it was really weird for me going from a ped handling to a bike (rs125)
i find that if ur inside leg is pushing against the tank and ur body ever so slightly leaning over, u can corner alot better
doing this gave me confidence and led me to learning a knee down

Crash your bike doing it.

Seriously Smile.

May be a bit costly, but you'll find you can push it a /long/ way further before you crash it probably.
If you're not hanging off, the pegs should go down before the tyres lose traction on a cbr600 (presuming not completely crap tyres).

I think the bottom line is: are you endangering yourself by taking corners so slow your going to cause an accident with impatient drivers, or are you cornering so fast your likely to come off?

If you can keep up with traffic on the corners then I'd not worry about it, quiet naturally you'll get better anyways.

you'll run out of safety margin before you'll run out of bike ability to go round the corner - ie only build up to as fast as is safe for the corner and you'll be miles inside the falling off envelope.

Keys - smoothness, gently winding it on - feeling it hook up, relax - don't hang on too tightly or you'll be forcing the bike to do something it shouldn't be doing...

Rider skills day on the track - it's not a full on track day but an exploration of what your bike can actually do in the safety of a track environment

cornering
braking
speed awareness
acceleration sense etc.

also, I can't recommend enough some form of advanced training on the road for building confidence and experience

Smile Before getting my ickle NSR I was cycling about 30 - 40 miles a week. Beleive it or no the skills involved in turning a push bike are very similar to that of a motorbike. I found turning very easy on the motorbike when I first started and I lay this down to going the push bike! SOunds silly but it might help.
