I use acetone for dissolving plastics when I’m making up plastic gloop , for when I’m doing fairing repairs.
I certainly wouldn’t put it on my chain !
Hey ho, lesson learnt.
Wire brush and an oily rag to clean the dirt & bogies off.
And a careful squirt with chain-lube after.
I like chain-lube in an aerosol can because it’s so easy to apply. ____________________ I am the sum total of my own existence, what went before makes me who I am now! |

Probably.. it doesn't hurt to get rid of the clumps on the outside but that's not really the business end of things, if you think about it. If you must, then as others have said use a light oil for cleaning - paraffin, diesel, wd40 type stuff (never WD40 itself - too dear ), white spirit etc.. then wipe/drip on your favourite lube - like Stinkers I use an old soap bottle with a nozzle. ____________________ Now: A100, GT250A, XJ598, FZ750

Fundamentally the chain along with the sprockets are consumable items. Cleaning and lubricating extends the life but such parts will eventually be replaced.
